Gentoo 2006.1 livecd with JMicron-Support (JMB363/361/36x) support-/feedback-thread, "small gentoo" for x86
The goal of "small gentoo" is to provide a liveCD to support (most) of the most cutting edge hardware / features, yet stay as close as possible to the original gentoo-livecd
Hi,
this post originally was dedicated to the experimental (aka testing) & final release of "small gentoo" for x86, a GNU/Gentoo Linux-based liveCD with JMicron support, hence stable & experimental are deprecated it now should serve as support-/ feedback-thread for the newer x86-releases
each release is being tested by myself for several hours, simulating an installation of gentoo
featurelist:
* based on gentoo 2006.1 with gcc 4.1.1, glibc 2.4, linux-headers-2.6.17
* based on cheater1034's kernel-release no-sources 2.6.18-rc4-no2
* reiser4progs
* ntfsprogs
* dosfstools
* hddtemp, smartmontools, ide-smart, hdparm, sdparm
* centericq (with icq, irc, aim-support), elinks, (sorry, no links), ncftp
* mc with 7zip-support (dunno if it's working)
* testdisk & photorec with ntfs & reiserfs-support (+ many more) for all your emergency needs
* mdadm, raidtools, device-mapper, evms
* bmon, htop
* mirrorselect (for a faster gentoo-installation)
* chkrootkit, rkhunter, chpax, chntpw (for forgotten NT passwords  )
* bc
final release specific features (in addition to the other ones) :
* modified & enhanced gentoo-initrd for better hardware-support & -detection
* irssi, screen, links (hangs sometimes !!)
* better detection of CD/DVD-Drive
* rp-pppoe, pppoe
* 2gb lowmem
* ipw2200 & ipw2100 support
* broad support of SCSI & S-ATA (try ATA_JMICRON for non-AHCI JMicron)
* rovclock (underclocking of ATI mobility cards)
* PPPoE-support
* partimage
post-r1 release specific features (in addition to the other ones) :
* glibc 2.5
* based on mm-sources (2.6.18-mm1)
* "native" support for evms & lvms2 (via genkernel)
* module-loading should work

One word of advice:
If you plan to use reiser4 for / (root), then don't enable RC_PARALLEL_STARTUP=yes
shouldn't use readahead-list and readahead-list-early , readahead-list works fine for me, so if you're into experiments, try it, but don't use PARALLEL_STARTUP! I'm not responsible if you kill all the data of you root partition

doh! my apologies. dhcpcd eth1 fixed it. that was easy, i should'a tried that myself.
i do have two adapters. the onboard and a 3com. onboard is connected. 3com isn't. previous livecd dhcpcd'd for both as i recall. now only eth0 seems to request an address. and evidently eth0 is the 3com.
also, just an fyi, i'm getting the following out-of-place looking boot messages(maybe of no consequence)...

I am having troubles getting these LiveCDs to work from USB.
They keep on saying LIVE CD NOT FOUND etc just before the USB drive pops up as a recognised /dev/sdx
I did the dobladecenter thing in the boot options as per the LiveUSB howto, but it is still not slow enough.
Slightly offtopic in this thread, but does anyone know how to get round this prob?
On topic.. I will have this LiveCD working if anyone helps

keep up the good work, I'm not going to use it because of Jmicron, but because it has now (as I understand) reiser4progs included and newest linux-headers, etc... And it seems you kept close to gentoo release and just added some missing features. Thanks.

I really appreciate your work as I have a P5B (not working at the moment, no CPU ).
If I understand the problem, your CD is needed to boot on the JMB controller. To tell the truth, I have no SATA drive so, I'll have to continue booting on the JMB after the install. This shouldn't be a problem as it's possible to boot on the cd. Could you tell me what, I'll have to do fort this to work?
First, I'll have to compile the good kernel (I'll take the same version as the live CD .) But which options need I to compile for this problem and which paramaters shoud I write in grub.conf and what will be the number of my device ? (HHD plugged on JMB).
Tell me if I'm wrong, it's possible? |

I couldn't seem to get my raid setup with this livecd, I'd go for making it squashfs, and using a vanilla kernel to make it stable.

I'm desperate for a solution to rtl8168 (your livecd is the only one that supports it) and my jmicron raid controller.
Your CD just seems to give a little nasty unionfs errors, so if possible, could you please fix it , and add screen, links, and irssi. so I can be open for major business.
I'm going crazy here not being able to install gentoo.

I think cheater1034 is away until tuesday as well after the shock this news gave him.  cheater1034 I understand how this feels but, you'll get over it with time.

Hmm, over time would be the next gentoo release, I can't wait that long to install gentoo can I?
Therefore I divised a crazy plan to install from the fedora core 5 livecd :-p

I'm a little busy right now & in addition to that my router died recently (yesterday evening, when I came back it just was off  )
& at the moment it's a little difficult to get to the internet without any pppoe-capable software installed under linux ...
I'm struggling with rp-pppoe
to get my internet working again (I'm writing from a win**** installation right now)
does the hardware-detection / support of my first experimental (non-enhanced version) work for you? I mean do you get those nasty "atomic counter underflow" errors with it?
if not I'll use it as a base & add the software you requested (hopefully raid will work then )
screen, links, and irssi will be added

Thanks to kernelOfTruth for this nice liveCD! I was to able to easily install gentoo yesterday on my new asus p5b board by using the enhanced_smallgentoo livecd. I did have the atomic counter underflow errors while booting but this did not seem to cause any trouble and all my sata/ide/ethenet devices were correctly detected.
However, I still have one problem remaining... I can't build a kernel that boots successfully... each one I built cause a kernel panic when booting (I can't identify the cause of the panic because I cannot scroll back the screen buffer to see the panic error message). I tried using 2.6.18-rc6-mm1 (with JMicron support) and 2.6.18-rc4. I even tried using the enhanced_smallgentoo's /proc/config.gz kernel config but it caused a panic too. Tonight I will try building a kernel using no-sources 2.6.18-rc4-no2 and we'll see if I can have more luck.
In the meantime I just copied the kernel/initrd used on the livecd to my /boot, grub'ed it and it runs absolutely great. A strange thing is that I do not get the "atomic counter underflow" errors anymore when booting the kernel this way. The downside is that I currently cannot build modules that work for this running kernel. But still, it allows me to run my system until I can build a kernel that does not panic AND detects all my devices correctly. |

yes, you're right , as far as I know it is one of 2 Live-CDs which support it ...

I have already changed & tried to solve this error, but it I can't fix it since my initrd (in the enhanced version) seems to access space / somewhere it shouldn't ...

I've had people tell me to make my own cd several times :-p, It's kind of hard to make a CD without gentoo/lux installed
and I've also had people say the ubuntu CD, but that's not cool, I need reiser4.
