I'm now trying for approx. two years to get OpenGL running flawlessly.

Could someone please tell me if he managed to get it running reliably on the X31? On my system it usually crashes after a fwe seconds when running several glxgears concurrently and moving them around a bit. Since 2.6.15/16 it even seems to get worse: the system even locks itself up when no drm/glx is activated.

If replying, please tell how you tested OpenGL on your X31. For example: I am running it at 1280x1024 resolution over the external VGA connector.

Please help to clarify if reliable OpenGL support is possible on that model at all.

Thx!

which card does the x31 use? I have T40p and I am using ATI firegl 9000 mobility. I have it working by following the howto ATI 3D.

Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY (prog-if 00 [VGA])
        Subsystem: IBM Unknown device 052f
Flags: bus master, stepping, fast Back2Back, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 66, IRQ 11
        Memory at e0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M]
        I/O ports at 3000 [size=256]
        Memory at c0100000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at c0120000 [disabled] [size=128K]
        Capabilities: [58] AGP version 2.0
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2

Hmmm... maybe it is the bus master mode?

---

Ok, at the moment it looks like I have finally solved the riddle!

Problems encountered:

1.) Don't use the console framebuffer. The DRM/Radeon modules must be initialized by xorg and not before.

2.) Linux kernel 2.6.16.1 + suspend 2.2.4 + voluntary kernel preemption seems to work fine here.

3.) Use the following xorg.conf. Look at the driver setup. There seem to be 3 critical points. I have a ThinkPad model 2672-C8G.

Code:

#
#mark@nina ~ $ glxgears
#2112 frames in 5.0 seconds = 422.400 FPS
#2445 frames in 5.0 seconds = 489.000 FPS
#2436 frames in 5.0 seconds = 487.200 FPS
#2445 frames in 5.0 seconds = 489.000 FPS
#2445 frames in 5.0 seconds = 489.000 FPS

Well, almost. Tuxracer produced a hard lock lately with this configuration. Don't have the time right now to find out which one of the remaining features are responsible for that -- especially because that lock up doesn't occur too frequently. It is time that we have an open-source graphics hardware. Btw: there's already such a project. But it is not aimed at high-performance.

http://opengraphics.org

-> http://wiki.duskglow.com/tiki-index.php?page=Open-Graphics

http://kerneltrap.org/node/5073

UPDATE:

Setting "ColorTiling" to "false" seems to make things stable. I'm currently using the 2.6.16-ck4 + suspend-2.2.4 kernel.

Thanks, but this link don't function...

I found this:http://lists.duskglow.com/mailman/listinfo/open-graphics
and they want to do something with 3D acceleration

And:http://lists.duskglow.com/open-graphics/2005-May/003113.html

It seems that Tech Source was involved...

And of course I'm out of topic...

Sorry if this is an old topic, but I really need help.

I have done all I can to get my silly little radeon drivers to work. Here is the xorg.conf file:

Code:

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
#   sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

The issue is that my computer crashes somewhat randomly, though it seems to only occur when something new appears on the screen (a new window, a question dialog, scrolling, etc.) and happens very often when browsing.

When I say "crash", I mean my monitor turns off, and the hard drive becomes inactive. I can't ping the computer anymore, or connect with SSH, etc.

It also appears to be a hard crash because nothing is written in the logs anywhere. I am using Ubuntu Dapper with xorg v7.0. I'm only on the Gentoo forums because this is the only place where someone said that they actually got it to work.

I appreciate any response I get!

The only good advice is this: avoid graphics cards other than nVidia ones by all means (ATI and Matrox are extraordinarily bad). I have set my X31 accidentally under water and I'm now rather happy about that -- no more problems with that damn ATI graphics chip. I once had an ATI Radeon 7500 (or so) and it even did not work correctly under Windows...

One other good advice is to avoid mainboards with nForce chipsets: suspend2 does not work on them when an nVidia graphics card is installed...

Also be careful about your power supply. According to tomshardware, many are rather crappy. I made that experience, too. My rather expensive super-silent one (proSilent Goldedition, 420W, including two fans!) went crazy somehow -- maybe due to current spikes because of power outages or whatever. I now have a SeaSonic power supply and hope it will work more reliably. Heck, I have bought two new mainboards because I thought I had burned them... but on the other side I'm now rid of that damn nVidia nForce2 chipset.

Isn't there any Linux hardware certification program like there are for Windows stuff?

LOL, figured it out. Turns out it was bad drivers.

HOWTO here (more newbie friendly) for the video card:

There ain't no good ATI drivers. Report any crashes you probably still will have. Nothing ever worked for me 100%.

Well, see crashes are seemingly random, and are never written in logs. :(

One was super wierd. I was writing mail in Opera when I pasted this huge bit of text, and held Page Down, and a green line starting drawing horizontally, then moved down the next row, filled that in, then moved down a row, inside the compose area. Strange. As soon as I hit the Delete key, everything was fine.

The other crash includes everything freezing, and some distortion near the bottom.

Not much to go by. :(

Yes, my crashes have been totally randomly, too. But I only got total system freezes, no graphics hickups.

I'm glad I have set my X31 under water accidentally. No more ATI graphics. Never. Despite IBM's claimed Linux support, they are obviously not using it themselves. Heck, we really need to set up a Linux hardware _recommendations_ site. All one finds on the net are some stupid tests and "quality stuff" like "that producer sells Linux with the Laptop", but looking at, for example, the Ubuntu wiki, one sees that most hardware has problems and that even Ubuntu is not really better than most other distros in supporting hardware. Additionally, problems like that just do not get mentioned anywhere. The X31 seemed to be a good buy, but in the end, it meant a lot of useless fiddling. Just look at all the X31 linux config guides! There are quite a lot of them out there, but none of these ever mentioned the useless and instable ATI graphics support.

We really need RECOMMENDATIONS! All the stuff I now know, I could have known it before buying the X31, but noone really cares. Instead, distros try to support every type of crappy hardware and implement superficial and basically worthless compatibility databases.

What do you mean "set my X31 underwater"? Are you refering to your laptop going underwater? (That must be an interestin' tale.) :P

Exactly. But it is not THAT interesting. Just a few drops of water while it was on...

Oh, well, a few drops aren't interesting. Now, if it got into, say, a sink, it would be interesting to know why it was there in the first place. :D

*ahem* OT. Anyway, do you know of any way to get some good output out of ATI drivers? A debug mode, say?

No. The only good ATI chip is a dead one -- because it won't consume your precious time for nothing. Sell it on e-Bay to some Windows user and buy a notebook with Intel GMA or nVidia graphics. The Lenovo 3000 N100 is reported to be absolutely stable under Linux (but that's only ONE report).

Unfortunately, this card isn't easy to get out (laptop) and wouldn't sell for much (192 MB RAM, 1 GHz PIII, 20 GB HD). Plus, I don't have any free income to begin with that I can just spend on whatever I want. :(

Ah well, it works, and it only crashes every other day, at extreme cases.
