i want to setup my printer so i can print from any client on the network. i have windows clients that need to print and i want to see if there are any alternatives to samba.

i have found these two topics so far:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-456501-highlight-samba+cups+windows+howto.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-493017-highlight-print+windows.html

if i can get away without using samba, that would be ideal. are there alternatives?

thanks,
slate

i've never tried the first link, but if all i needed to do is print from windows, that is the route i would take.

i got it to work with out samba! after reading the gentoo printing howto, there is a section that talks about ipp printing. i just hooked it up that way. works perfect since i only have a couple machine to connect. way better than installing samba and having all that cruft on my server for nothing more than sharing a printer.

I wish i didn't need to share files. I'd love to get rid of samba. :)

If all you need to do is share files, why don't you run a FTP server and block the FTP port on your router?
