|
|
Hi everyone,
I started the Gentoo LiveCD. Then I tried to set a root password with passwd. This works. Then I created a user using useradd. I changed to this user and wanted to change back to root with su-. Ok, now I type in EXACTLY the same password and it says, it's wrong.
What the fuck did I wrong or is wrong with passwd? |

Unless you mistyped the password, maybe the user is not allowed to su, that is they are not in the wheel group. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/faq.xml#su says:
Quote: | Why can't a user su to root?
For security reasons, users may only su to root if they belong to the wheel group. To add a username to the wheel group, issue the following command as root:
Code: | Code Listing 3.2: Adding a user to the wheel group
# gpasswd -a username wheel |

the thing that sucks about that is that you have to be root to add someone to that group...you may have to reboot to get back to root, then add the user to wheel ASAP |

Ah yes, I didn't think of that, could be a problem, but why reboot, why not just log out? |

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Duplicate Threads.
[mod]Moved to duplicates in favour of https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-11126.html - it includes a link to the FAQ entry that answers your question.[/mod] _________________ Jorge.
