|
|
Hi all,
I am about 2 weeks into messing around with Gentoo. I like it! However, I never was successful in my attempts to go from 2.4 -> the 2.6 branch (gcc and glibc never wanted to compile). Needless to say I was thrilled to see there is a 2006.1 install out, assuming that a fresh install with that CD would get me on 2.6 with minimal effort.
However, I am unable to get anywhere with this installation CD.
The bootup appears to go fine, my hardware looks to be detected properly. Everything looks good up until the * Starting local ...
From here, I get a bunch of "Module is unknown" messages, scrolling in amongst the livecd login prompts. Then after about 6 or so of those, I get:
Code: |
* Starting local ...
livecd login: root (automatic login)
Module is unknown
livecd login: root (automatic login)
Module is unknown
livecd login: root (automatic login)
Module is unknown
livecd login: root (automatic login)
Module is unknown
livecd login: root (automatic login)
Module is unknown
livecd login: root (automatic login)
Module is unknown

And then it "hangs". Not a lockup, but it won't accept my keyboard input and the install scripts never kick in. Of course, every 5 minutes the cX's respawn too fast and get re-disabled. I end up ctrl-alt-del to reboot it and try again.
Is there something funky with these kernels and the console ptys on this sun box? I tried both 2616 and 2617 and it's the same on both.
My hardware:
Ultra 2 (2x300)
OpenBoot 3.25
1024MB RAM
1x 9GB, 1x 18GB HDD
TYPE6 Keyboard (not USB)
Anybody have some ideas on this one? I would love to get this workstation functional.
Thanks for your time. |

Okay, I thought perhaps it was some kind of SBUS problem. So I tried the CD in my Ultra30 and it does the same thing.
Ultra30
Openboot 3.27
1x UltraSPARC-II 296MHz
512MB RAM
Elite3d UPA
1x 4GB, 1x9GB HDD |

There's a problem with the 2006.1 Universal InstallCD, i'm currently fixing it and it'll be pushed to the mirrors shortly.
In the mean time you can use the 2006.1 Minimal InstallCD that doesn't suffer from this problem. _________________ Gustavo Zacarias

The InstallCD shouldn't prefer prom console over atyfb on a u5 - at least it doesn't on mine.
Try passing the corresponding video parameter to see if it helps, IIRC "video=atyfb:1024x768@60" (or corresponding resolution/refresh rate) so that atyfb gets the higher hand. _________________ Gustavo Zacarias
