I've got mplayer / mplayerplug-in playnig quicktime .movs and that's all cool. if only it could play them completely :(

It plays all the movie in the cache fine, but then it goes jerky, like it's not filling the cache back up from the stream. I've increased the cache to the max (64mb), but that'snot enough to fit in all of the X2 large trailer.

Anyone got any ideas how I can fix this?

my config:
Code:

vo=xv,x11,sdl
ao=arts,alsa,oss,sdl
prefer-aspect=1
noembed=0
#use-gui=1
#gui=yes
#zoom=no
double=yes
cache=65536

Update

I tried downloading the stream using
Code:

mplayer -dumpstream -dumpfile x2-tlrD_480.mov http://a772.g.akamai.net/5/772/51/0391736c636417/1a1a1aaa2198c627970773d80669d84574a8d80d3cb12453c02589f25382f668c9329e0375e8177dec64930b38a50a78d709/X2-tlrD_480.mov

but that didn't work, it just produces the following output
Code:

Resolving a772.g.akamai.net ...
Connecting to server a772.g.akamai.net[193.108.153.15]:80 ...
Cache size set to 65536 KBytes
Connected to server: a772.g.akamai.net
Stream not seekable!
Core dumped ;)

Exiting... (End of file)

Braempje: I;ve seen the tips & tricks thread, some handy stuff there but nothing that helps my prob. :(

silverter: I keep digging through the mplayer man page, but I'm struggling to find a useful option. maybe I've been looking at it too much! ;) Let me know if you make any progress.

This works for me or rencode to avi "-oac mp3lame -ovc lavc ...." :
Code:
 mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy -o X2-tlrD_480.mov http://a772.g.akamai.net/5/772/51/0391736c636417/1a1a1aaa2198c627970773d80669d84574a8d80d3cb12453c02589f25382f668c9329e0375e8177dec64930b38a50a78d709/X2-tlrD_m480.mov

When player live streams over the net increase your cache setting.

I have my cache set up to the maximum (64mb) and I do get a lot more of the stream played smoothly, just not all of it.

I tried that mencoder command as you typed it, and I do get a file downloaded but when I play that file I get no sound a blank window. :(

However encoding with mp3lame and lavc did work:D, so it seems I need to download and convert all the trailers I want to watch. The syncing of the sound was out so I need to play with that.

Update
I tried using -oac mp3lame -ovc divx4 and the syncing was loads better.

Only problem is it works for that X2 trailer but I can't get any others. all the ones I tried I get:
Code:

Resolving a772.g.akamai.net ...
Connecting to server a772.g.akamai.net[194.176.73.150]:80 ...
Cache size set to 320 KBytes
Connected to server: a772.g.akamai.net
success: format: 7  data: 0x0 - 0x0
MOV: Reference Media file!!!
QuickTime/MOV file format detected.
Segmentation fault

this was using:
Code:

mencoder -oac mp3lame -ovc divx4 -o the_italian_job.avi http://a772.g.akamai.net/5/772/51/c9ed5852bdeec7/1a1a1aaa2198c627970773d80669d84574a8d80d3cb12453c02589f25382f668c9329e0375e81787e85abb28970c7aee1d91f95ebd269afb67d0319ffe68d739/the_italian_job_480.mov

thanx for the tip, but I've already got faad2 installed.

I'm beginning to think it might be worth spending the money on crossover plugin .....

Did you install Live ?

* media-plugins/live [ Masked ]
Latest version available: 2003.04.11
Latest version installed: 2003.04.11
Size of downloaded files: 266 kB
Homepage: http://www.live.com/
Description: Source-code libraries for standards-based RTP/RTCP/RTSP multimedia streaming, suitable for embedded and/or low-cost streaming applications

After I installed that and reemerged mplayer I could handle a lot more streaming ;-) (didn't test yours)

Success
Stefan

Well it get's the whole trailer down, but it only plays part of it smoothly, the last part is always jerky/choppy. That jerky bit decreases when I increase the cache setting.

It does this with any of the trailers from apple.com, whether I call mplayer from the command line or it's mplayerplug-in in galeon.

Hi,

i have exactly the same jerkiness when streaming them directly and also found no solution as of now.
However i found a solution to the mplayer -dumpstream problem. What they do is that they redirect the url you can pick to the source page to a different address, thats why dumpstream fails. Apparently mplayer notices this redirection in play mode, but cant cope with it in the dumpstream mode. you can see the real url when you start the stream from commandline:

Code:

Playing http://a772.g.akamai.net/5/772/51/39e84cbf4218c9/1a1a1aaa2198c627970773d80669d84574a8d80d3cb12453c02589f25382f668c9329e0375e8177dec64930a7ceb59c01f93087ae8/wrong_turn-tlr_480.mov
Resolving a772.g.akamai.net ...
Connecting to server a772.g.akamai.net[80.15.235.152]:80 ...
Cache size set to 40000 KBytes
Connected to server: a772.g.akamai.net
Cache fill:  0,00% (1495 bytes)    MOV: Reference Media file!!!
QuickTime/MOV file format detected.

Playing http://a772.g.akamai.net/5/772/51/39e84cbf4218c9/1a1a1aaa2198c627970773d80669d84574a8d80d3cb12453c02589f25382f668c9329e0375e8177dec64930a7ceb59c01f93087ae8/wrong_turn-tlr_m480.mov
Resolving a772.g.akamai.net ...
Connecting to server a772.g.akamai.net[80.15.235.161]:80 ...
Cache size set to 40000 KBytes

Cache fill:  0,16% (65536 bytes)

Apple just seems to add an m just before the resolution in the filename, e.g. blablub_480.mov is named blablub_m480.mov. I dont know iif this holds true for every trailer they got though, but you can just check the mplayer commandline output then...

Don't forget to recompile mplayer after merging any support libraries.
