can someone please explain the difference between these for me?
I have a Thinkpad 240x I am wondering which one I should use for power management. |

well concisely, APM is provided by BIOS, I think 240x supports linux APM + doesn't thinkpad come with a PM device that even Windows doesn't recognize and have to download seperate drivers for it.
I think there is a port for that driver in portage too.
ACPI is a new standard, which puts the onus of power management on the OS, the good thing is that you can put the machine in multiple sleep modes, depending on what you want - S0(power on) S1(suspend-to-ram) S2(suspend-to-disk) S4(windows standby equivalent), S5(soft power off)
