lightscribe HP DVD640i BENQ1625

Kernel not recognizing your hardware? Problems with power management or PCMCIA? What hardware is compatible with Gentoo? See here. (Only for kernels supported by Gentoo.)

lightscribe HP DVD640i BENQ1625

Hi, I am interested in the lightscribe technology. A greyscale label is burned by the DVD-Writer on special media CDs and DVDs.

I sent an email to HP Presales and to my disbelief was informed that HP DVD640i is not compatible with Linux. While I am aware that currently no solution exists to burn labels with this drive under GNU/Linux, i would like to know if the drive really does not work under Linux at all. I think thats not true, anyway a BENQ 1625 DVD-writer is working fine in my Ubuntu Box and I dual boot Windows to burn the labels.

Please post your experiences with the HP DVD640i, thank you very much!

Any Info on a possible lightscribe solution in linux is appreciated (HP sells Linux Notebooks after all, perhaps they change their mind about supporting lightscribe on Unix in the near future?)

Regards
Ralph

The HP drive does function in linux. I have two of them that function fine (lightscribe stuff not included). HP just says that because:
1. They don't know wtf they are talking about
2. They don't want to support linux.

I suspect it is #2.

Great! Too bad this news comes a week after I ordered a new laptop without a lightscribe drive and the lightscribe drive in my desktop crapped out. Oh well...It'll come in handy after I RMA the dead desktop drive.
