After following the handbook step by step I got this error message after my first reeboot:

Code:
cheking file system…
fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/ROOT
/dev/ROOT:
the superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contain an ext2 filesystem. (and not a swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck –b 8193 <device>

   *Filesystem couldn’t be fixed :(
give root password for maintenance
(or type control-d to continue):

(none) ~ #

I did not do anything because I wasn't sure what was the problem. Since I took the exact same file extention as the handbook states.

Quote:
#mke2fs /dev/hdd1
#mke2fs -j /dev/hdd3
#mkswap /dev/hdd2

Any ideas ?

Hi.

You have forgotten to update your /etc/fstab file and replace the /dev/ROOT, /dev/BOOT and or /dev/SWAP entries with the appropriate partitions.
Boot with the live-cd, mount your partitions and edit your file. Reboot and check if everything is ok.

I guess this is what thet mean when they say
Quote:
The default /etc/fstab file provided by Gentoo is not a valid fstab file, so start nano (or your favorite editor) to create your /etc/fstab:

Jambonant!

Don't think you are the only one :-)
I ran into the same thing this morning around 6:20 after spending the whole night reading and installing... I enjoyed the proceedings very much until that point...

So, thank you for posting your question!

And thanks jmbsvicetto for the key :-)
