The forums are filled with great information. And although the phpBB search tool is useful, it has limitations when it comes to searching for information.

So the next time you are having difficulty finding what you are looking for, try using google.

  1. Open your browser and enter www.google.com in the address bar.

  2. Enter your search terms in the search bar and add site:forums.gentoo.org. Your entry should look something like this:
    Code:
    <search keywords> site:forums.gentoo.org

Additional tips:

  • You can change the site parameter to gentoo.org to search the whole site, or any other site for that matter. This is helpful for reducing your hits, when you have a rough idea where the information is.
  • Use quotes for specific phrases.
  • Exclude words by adding the '-' symbol immediately before the word.
  • Learn to use google, it can be your friend.

You can also stick it before quotes to exclude phrases ;-)

Great tip! This works a lot better than the 'Quick search' on top! :D

it really wouldn't be too difficult for the admins of this site to add the google search to the pages would it?

Not to sure about that, since the forum is actually an application called phpBB and not something they build themselves. Meaning that if phpBB does not support it, you would have to either rewrite the code :? or put a feature request in with the phpBB group.

Technically it's no problem to add a Google search bar; the codebase of this forum differs significantly from phpbb due to constant improvements from our infrastructure team. We don't add it though as it would cause loads of duplicate threads because the Google search index doesn't contain current topics. See Gentoo forum search sucks as well.

Actually as you see on the bottom of the forums sites "phpBB 2.0.21-gentoo-p1", it is already a gentoo customized version of phpBB.

I would love to see that search included on this site, since the original search of the forum sucks quite alot. But google is a profit oriented company and isn't related to the gentoo project anyhow afaik, so I doubt that it'll get included here.

No reason to not use that google feature though.
