Hi,

I'd like to upgrade the OBP on my Ultra 10. I don't know how to do this, and don't have access to Solaris disks. Can anybody help me?

Many thanks,

Chris.

Why would you need the solaris disks?

Hi,

My understanding is that if I put the OBP update in /, it has to be a Solaris filesystem, not Ext2/3. Is this correct?

Cheers,

Chris.

Yes you can upgrade your OBP without installing Solaris, however it will require netbooting the update (which most updates to OBP support). The Gentoo Linux based Netboot HOWTO explains how to setup a server to host the netboot environment your SPARC system will need. Basically instead of a regular netboot image that you'd use to install Gentoo with, you'd put the OBP update file in its place.

You'll also need to make sure that the jumper on the motherboard of your system is set correctly to allow OBP to be flashed (otherwise it'll fail, regardless if its via a netboot or Solaris).

Prefer not to netboot as main PC works beautifully and don't want to mess with network settings :-(

Well other than starting up two services on your PC (assuming the PC and the SPARC are on the same network subnet and segment), it really doesn't do anything to your PC.

However if you chose not to netboot, then you're pretty much left with the Solaris option as I don't think you can flash from any of the *BSDs either.

What are the advantages of an upgrade? If everything is fine now, why change?

Hi,

Everything isn't alright. Unfortunately, I am unable to get other distro's to install (Debian Etch and Ubuntu). The install hangs whilst "Booting Linux", during the SILO stage. Apparently this is a CD issue, addressed by an OBP upgrade.
Thanks,

Chris.
