|
|
HI,
I am using gentoo on my ultrasparc. It was working okay-ish with kernel 2.4 (it's an old system after all! ). I installed kernel 2.6 and now the 2.4 kernel doesn't boot due to some file system error, so using it is not currently an option.
After I installed 2.6, the performance has been pretty sluggish in terms of the response of the system. Also, emerge --metadata takes like forever now. The hard disk performance still gives the same results approximately.
Code: | hdparm -tT /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
Timing O_DIRECT cached reads: 740 MB in 2.01 seconds = 368.87 MB/sec
Timing O_DIRECT disk reads: 38 MB in 3.09 seconds = 12.29 MB/sec

The kernel config is available here. The system is as follows

Most people from what I have seen reported having experienced the opposite. You might make sure that you don't have pre-emptive kernel support enabled as it was last reported to not work so well and in some cases cause problems.
Which 2.6 kernel are you using? |

I had pre-emt enabled, I disabled it, but there hasn't been much improvement, a slight lagging is still there.
kernel version is 2.6.16-gentoo-r9. _________________ Pdict - dockable dictionary client for linux
