De linux bestandssystemen hebben normaal gezien heel weinig last van fragmentatie. Er zijn tools dacht ik, maar ze zijn niet de moeite waard om te gebruiken :-)

De meest gebruikte tool om ext2's en ext3's te defragmenteren noemt men "defrag".
Maar:
- Iedereen weet dat je een linux filesystem niet moet defragmenteren, maar geld dit voor alle linux filesystems ?
-Hoe komt het dat linux filesystems zo weinig last hebben van fragmentatie ?
-Hebben fat16,fat32 en ntfs onder linux ook minder last van fragmentatie ?

De gangbare bestandssystemen in Linux hebben nauwelijks tot geen fragmentatie binnen de bestanden. De gangbare bestandssystemen in Windows hebben meer fragmentatie binnen de bestanden. Tussen de bestanden treedt zowel onder de Linux als de windows bestandssystemen fragmentatie op. Bijna alle 'defraggers' voor Linux bestandssystemen hebben als voornaamste functie het ordenen van de bestanden op de schijf (meest gebruikte aan de buitenkant etc.) terwijl het standaard Windows defraggertje alleen binnen de bestanden defragmenteert. (Het programma schijnt echter niet goed te werken / de zaak te verlechteren.)
