Restored the title. Even with the user who posted this having left and removed the contents of this post, among others, the topic is worth keeping around, even sticky (which was originally done by amne). -- desultory

edit: I no longer have the ability to offer hosting
In fact I'm looking for hosting myself, anyone who wouldn't mind offering SSH access to a server with the ability to host HTTP/SMTP and IMAP would be greatly appreciated. I'm an experienced admin and *nix user; so can help out in anyway needed as well. _________________

Probably one or two more, depending on how much space I have left. All anyone needs to do is pm me. _________________ "I cannot support a movement that exploded spending and borrowing and blames its successor for the debt."

Actually, I agree.
If regulars actually take advantage of the thread, it would make a great sticky. _________________ "I cannot support a movement that exploded spending and borrowing and blames its successor for the debt."

If anyone wants space on my website for posting of how-tos or technology Op-Eds I'm more then willing to let folk one for that. I'm also willing to offer blog space on Sanctum if anyone wants to do tech blogging there. _________________ [Owner/Operator: Dhampir Dreams]

The only thing I would recommend is changing the title of the post.
I clicked on it, well, because it's a slow day at work. But I expected to read another post asking us to support a cause - Register as a genuine Linux user, Display the Official Linux Logo, Let's find and beat the man in the pink shirt on the Ubuntu homepage, sign the petition for...
You get the idea.
I personally think that this is a great idea. I have actually already contacted a fellow Gentoo member to ask for a favor. I wanted to get my Great-Grandfather's birth certificate from the town where he was born in Sicily. My italian being on the border of non-existant, meant that I could not write a letter, but better yet, seeing that his location was the town next door, I asked if he could just go to the records building and request a copy on my behalf. Unfortunately, for a few reasons, it was unsuccessful, primarily because: Quote: | "There is a problem. The building where the archives are located and they keep the old records is falling down and until repairs are made no one can enter." |
Perhaps something like "Hammurabi's trading post" or something a bit more descriptive would make a better title.
And if you were wondering, I just like to say Hammurabi, but it is fitting. |

I'm not sure if this is going to work out, but Ive been wanting to set up DNS services on a few different servers on static IP's at client sites. I have a few clients with static IP's that are unusued, and who are more than happy to let me put a server on their free statics, so that I can co-lo some services...provided I dont murder their bandwidth. I havent had much time lately to look into it, but saw this thread today and figured id mention it. My question is, could that help anyone? Im setting them up first of all so I always have a few servers somewhere I can use for DNS, maybe other stuff if need be. So I suppose I could offer DNS hosting to a limited amount of people?? Is this possible/helpful? |

Ok, this is what I'm going to do.
Because I like the idea of this thread so much, I'm going to set up a section of web space devoted to blogs for any regulars of this forum (say at least 100 posts). I will use Simple PHP Blog as the software, and I will set it up myself.
I doubt too many will take advantage of this, but the offer stands for as long as I routinely visit the forum to check private messages.
You can do anything with the blog, provided it doesn't get me into trouble with the law . It'd also be nice if you mentioned linux or open source from time to time as well.
J.
Edit: This is just meant to be a quick solution for someone who wants a blog but doesn't want to go through the process of setting it up through google or whatever. _________________ "I cannot support a movement that exploded spending and borrowing and blames its successor for the debt."

I can't offer any technical stuff, but I'm a vet so if anyone above n00b status wants (non emergency) advice on anything, just send me a PM, and I'll do my best. I log on most days. _________________ Things you might say if you never took Physics: "I'm overweight even though I don't overeat." - Neil deGrasse Tyson |

I don't understand why you won't host these things. I've never heard anyone explicitly say they won't host educational materials before.

We dont want people who dont use Gentoo and never will just coming on here because a friend told them to.
The rules are almost the same as free software, you get it free but at a price. The "price" with F/OSS is that you have to make it avaliable to others and that the alterations have to be made avaliable, the "price" here is that you are a good Gentoo and forum member so by helping out with Gentoo you are eligable for the kindness that others offer.
