Just emerged Avahi and when I try and start (/etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start) I get the following :

Code:
* Starting avahi-daemon ...
 Timeout reached while wating for return value
 Could not receive return value from daemon process.

Anyone have any ideas?? I've had a good look around and cannot find anything on this error!

I'm also having the same problem running the same command,
so I added it to boot using rc-update, as I saw couldn't find any help and got the same error message, but looking in the file /var/log/messages at the time of the boot, I see the following lines

Code:
sshd[8623]: Server listening on 0.0.0.0 port 22.
avahi-daemon[8722]: cap_set_proc() failed: Operation not permitted

I also get the second line when I run "avahi-daemon" without the start.

not sure if the sshd line is related, but its the line before and 0.0.0.0 just looks weird.

I don't much about this sort of thing, so I checked sshd out in man and I noticed
Code:

     -4      Forces sshd to use IPv4 addresses only.

     -6      Forces sshd to use IPv6 addresses only.

Which I spotted mentioned in the file /etc/avahi/avahi-daemon.conf
Code:
use-ipv4=yes
use-ipv6=no

So I guess they are linked somehow

I hope this helps someone figure out what is happening, can you check to see if you are getting the same error message in /var/log/messages RattyMan, I know its a long file, I would like to know if it is the same problem as me or not, thanks

Sorry, should have replied to my own post on this. I found this is related to themodule "capability". I'm not sure what that does, I think that it's the multicast module but could be wrong. Once I did,
Code:
modprobe capability

Then the avahi daemon started without error.

Cheers

Hi, I've got it working now :D

Looking through the forum posts I found https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-162583.html which also gives the error"cap_set_proc() failed: Operation not permitted".

I tried modprobe capability but that didn't work, I got
Code:
FATAL: Module capability not found.

Anyhow, I took the alternative option of disabling

Code:
*Security options  --->
  [*] Enable different security models

in the kernel, for some reason I had to remerge my display drivers (nvidia) even though it wasn't a change of kernel version.

And now I get
* Starting avahi-daemon [ok]

the only thing now is that I put it the security thing in the kernel in the for the Realtime support for JACK, will have to check how that is affected.
Hopefully it will still work but I'm not counting my chickens yet.
