Someone mentioned nVidia won't be supporting the new 7.1 ABI until the 9xxx series, well nVidia released a 9128 beta driver recently for Windows, so here's hoping that the Linux 9xxx series isn't far behind.

Right now we have 6.8 users (stable) and 7.1 (testing) users. Stupid devs ;) Xorg 7.0 is the most useable version but kind of unavailable in Gentoo since today.

I am so extrem angy!
I can do nothing, i cant even compile the old xorg, all is broken.
Everytime i try to compile a X related prog i get "unrecognized option: xorg-x11" and none of the programms compile. Man why u do this shit to me? I have other things to do then repairing my system, wich is broken by the fucking portage update!
I am really pissed off!!

How is Xorg 7.0 unavailable? I am using it right now
All I did was mask the 7.1 files (only something like 5 of them). Those files will stay masked until next nvidia driver

I've been using ~arch for two years now and it's the first time I experienced a thing like this.

The one thing that annoys me is that it was possible to install Xorg 7.1 when the binary drivers for ati or nvidia are installed. I thought a block could be implemented bi-directional in ebuilds.

Ok, it's not unavailable. Xorg-x11 7.0 is just the only version that requires weird configuration of portage in /etc/portage and that's stupid, because 7.0 is the most usable Xorg-x11 version.

I would recommend to remove the blocking section in the nvidia driver ebuild and emerge xorg 7.1 - its working fine with nvidia binary driver ... I assume the reason why people think that the nvidia driver doesn't work with xorg 7.1 is that other drivers at that time prevented xorg from starting ( mouse and keyboard drivers as far as I remember ) - plus the fact that nvidia devs themselve think so. Yet other people and I myself experience that :

nvidia-glx-1.0.8762 plus xorg-server-1.1.0 is working fine - no ABI breakage.

However, I only know that my system is working fine and that of others - so if it doesn't work please tell so, but I hope it will work for everyone.

I agree.

Most of my machines are using the opensource radeon driver, and Xorg 7.1 works fine here.

This is true for me only if I set norenderaccel to false in my xorg.conf. After this, 2D graphics performance is not significantly diminished, fonts (including anti-aliasing) are fine and 3D still works. I am not using Composite or XGL.

Great, now I gotta admin all new packages one by one, manually.

Look ~arch is testing, I assume everyone who runs it, knows that, and if they don't then tough beans for them. Hardmasking it is fine too, because the ones that have no problems (and I am not alone) run things just fine. To put such a block screws up EVERYONE and really punishes those that can manage.

I don't need things blocked unless they cannot directly sit with eachother on the same system. To block something over a controversial problem is a bad call.

I think that's rather more a matter of degree than a hard and fast rule.

Yes, I'm a big boy. Yes I understand the risks of ~x86 and I'm willing to dig myself out of any holes in which I find myself.

But this comes hard on the heels of the GCC 4.1.1 fiasco and I've already spent most of the last week recompiliing my system. That's two major rebuilds in as many weeks.

This is a working machine and I was planning on using it to give a major presentation at work today. Now I'm going to have to deliver it using acrobat and windows.

So all in all, I'm just a wee bit peeved about this one.

(offtopic:)
What kind of video card do you use? What kind of card does the opensource radeon driver support?

I had issues where when xorg 7.1 first went up I had disappearing text and random 2d glitching.

Solution is simply to nuke the nvidia binary drivers, then just use the nv module until proper nvidia drivers come out. I don't use the 3d acceleration at all so its no drama.

Otherwise as others have said, simply mask out 7.1 and sit out the storm. Using ~x86 you gotta expect drama every so often. Living on the bleeding edge, every so often you're going to get cut, and sometimes that cut is really gonna hurt!

If it weren't for us guinea pigs the poor ppl on stable would have to deal with all this stuff :)

Yeah, but nv sucks in 2d performance. When I emerge something in gnome-terminal, just the terminal scrolling makes the X process consume... a 25-30% CPU! That's with an Athlon64 3200+ and a GeForce 6600GT.

Really? Hmmm, I haven't noticed too great a performance hit, but then I'm running effectively dual fx55s 2gb ram and 7800gtx :) You might want to try urxvt which performs much better than gnome-terminal, and much kinder on ram when run in daemon mode.

Apart from that we're all stuck until nvidia bring out the 90 series drivers :/

Exactly the same problems here and I used exactly the same workaround. Nvidia binary nuked until better times come. :D

Whats wrong with a hardmask then? Do we really need a hardcoded block? I mean how many levels does Gentoo need? As it stands, the redundent levels cause way more micro-managing than should be required.

Got the 1.0.8762 drivers working with dualhead by commenting this out in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Code:
#Section "Extensions"
#       Option          "Composite" "Enable"
#       Option          "RENDER" "Enable"
#EndSection

I had to put this in my driver section as well:
Code:
Option          "NoRenderExtension" "true"

Please continue in xorg-server-1.0.99.x ABI breaks nvidia/ati binary drivers.
