I have googled around for about an hour now with no idea of whats going on or why its not finding a Berkeley DB even though it says db.h said it found one..

Code: Select all

checking dynamic linker characteristics... GNU/Linux ld.so
checking how to hardcode library paths into programs... immediate
checking for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc option to accept ANSI C... none needed
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... (cached) yes
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /bin/install -c
checking GCC version... 3.4.6
checking for libgcrypt-config... yes
checking gcrypt version... 1.2.2
checking for pkg-config... /usr/bin/pkg-config
checking for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-pkg-config... (cached) /usr/bin/pkg-config
checking pkg-config is at least version 0.9.0... yes
checking for GLIB... yes
checking db.h usability... yes
checking db.h presence... yes
checking for db.h... yes
checking Berkeley Database library version... 4.3
checking for in -ldb-4.3... no
checking for in -ldb4... no
configure: error: db.h reports Berkeley DB version is 4.3 but no db-4.3 library
exists

Don't worry. It just takes time to get used to and one needs to know what to look for. Take a look at this section which I found by searching backwards for "failed". Before the last errors are a lot of intentional ones. Most fo them are easy to recognise as such.

Code: Select all

configure:21255: checking for in -ldb4
configure:21285: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -o conftest -march=k8 -O2 -pipe -DWITH_GCRYPT -DWITH_GLIB2 -Dg_string_sprintf=g_string_printf -Dg_string_sprintfa=g_string_append_printf -DBDB_V4 conftest.c -ldb4 -lgcrypt >&5
conftest.c:33: error: syntax error before ')' token
conftest.c: In function `main':
conftest.c:37: error: syntax error before ')' token
configure:21291: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:

configure:21317: result: no
configure:21327: error: db.h reports Berkeley DB version is 4.3 but no db-4.3 library exists
To check for Berkeley DB, a test program (shown after "failed program was:") is being compiled and that fails.

Looking at the problems (syntax errors in lines 33 and 37 of the test program) you can see that in line 33 "char ()" gets called as a function - but it's a type and not a function like that.

In the "main" part there's line 37 with just "();" in it. That's just weird, too. A function name is missing there.

So: There's simply stuff missing in those test programs that trigger the failure but I cannot explain why and thus cannot really help you, unfortunately. I've never seen a configure failing like that in years... The only thing I can advise you to do is re-emerging Berkeley DB. But that's just guess work.

You *could* edit the configure script to temporarily fix this problem (config.log shows you the line numbers, too) but that might lead to more unexplicable problems later because it doesn't fix the problem itself but hides the consequences. Even if it works at first, stuff might go wrong later. So I'd advise you not to do it.

VERY strange... I did an emerge -s berkeley and this is what popped up

Code: Select all

*  dev-perl/BerkeleyDB
      Latest version available: 0.27
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
      Size of files: 151 kB
      Homepage: http://search.cpan.org/~pmqs/BerkeleyDB-0.27
Description: This module provides Berkeley DB interface for Perl.
      License: GPL-2

but uh...
...db.h reports Berkeley DB version is 4.3...

Anybody have any idea why it claims there is something installed when it is clearly not?

I have to emerge -e world because of upcoming gcc/glibc upgrade
