Hello, i have read all threads about this, but still have the same problem:
Code:
VFS: cannot open root device "sda3" on unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel-Panic not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

this error message means that the kernel doesn't know what device you mean for your root device and thus / cannot be mounted. the block device number (0,0) means that the device specified is completely unknown to the kernel (as opposed to cases where there is (3,1) or similar, then it would mean that the kernel doesn't understand the filesystem on the device).

your kernel configuration suggest you only have scsi/sata enabled, however the lspci output suggests your storage controller is sata... are you sure you installed to sda and not hda? in any case this appears to be a problem with out kernel, not grub, fstab or similar. (unless sda3 is not your root device, then it would be a problem with the grub configuration)

Yes, i am sure, because i don't have any IDE hard drives, only this RAID.

What i need to change in kernel to get it works?

[EDIT] P.S. According to /root/.bash_history "grub-install /dev/sda"...

well, you'll need to figure out what drivers are in use. boot the gentoo cd, use lsmod and make sure all the drivers in there are compiled into your kernel.

Just my two cents: Run 'fdisk -l' to see how Linux sees you HDD's, then look what you have in GRUB device.map.

Janis, did you include this driver?
Code:

<*> Intel/ICP (former GDT SCSI Disk Array) RAID Controller support

your lsmod output says it's in use, but the kernel configuration you posted implies something else... it's not in the sata section, but in the list with "regular" scsi low-level drivers.

i'm suffering from the same problem everything appears to be correct but my kernel can't find root :O i'm using a ATI/ULi chipset though and using lilo as my bootloader which in turn boots from the ntbootloader

an excerpt from your .config:
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA is not set

recompile your kernel : )

EDIT: aha, one more thing. it doesnt appear to be doing any damage, but you should remove the first line in your current grub.conf (boot=/dev/sda). its doing nothing and (i assume) may cause problems sooner or later.

Hi!

Strange (at least for me). I've just installed beyond sources and got the same error. I have noticed that CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA is not set, recompiled kernel and it works now. thanks vesselin. What I also did, I checked support for Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers -> Intel PIIX/ICH SATA support. Is that ok?

Now what I don't understand, how everything worked until now. I have used the same config file which I used with gento-sources?

I found my solution to that problem here http://kerneltrap.org/node/1955

Quote:
I had this same problem running on two different machines. I am not sure what causes it but the fix I used was to specify the major and minor numbers of the device that holds the root filesystem.

Eg. If "/" is on /dev/hda2 then type "ls -l /dev/hda2" and you will see the major and minor number of the disk, for example on my system I get:

brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 2 Sep 15 14:40 /dev/hda2

Therefore the (major, minor) number are (3,2).

Translate this number to hexadecimal and pad to a two digit number, eg: 3,2 becomes 0302 and you have the hexadecimal form of the block device.

Now you can use this in place of "root=/dev/hda2" or "root=LABEL=/" in /etc/grub.conf

Thus you would use "root=0302" in my case. This should also work with lilo but I have not tested this.

Same problem here (...cannot open root device "md3"...) when booting from a SATA-RAID-1 following the Gentoo Linux x86 with Software Raid and LVM2 Quick Install Guide on a new amd64 system (without LVM).
I have been able to solve it by passing the layout of the raid array to the kernel:
Quote:

title Gentoo Linux - Kernel 2.6.19-r4
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/kernel-2.6.19-gentoo-r4 root=/dev/md3 md=3,/dev/sda3,/dev/sdb3

Furthermore I had to add the boot partition to /etc/mdadm.conf to get rid of the annoying error messages on hard disk check on startup:
Quote:

ARRAY /dev/md1 devices=/dev/sda1,/dev/sdb1

Thanks that solved the issue for me as well. Followed the same guide as you.

I notice that help for CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA says that it is depreciated and if set will interfere with the newer libata. For me going the "Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers" without setting CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA worked. Only mentioned because setting both might end up in difficulties.

Hi, i'm toggling this variable through gconfig right now, as am in same situation with suspend2 kernel, and thought it might be useful to have kernel help inlined here...

Support for SATA (deprecated; conflicts with libata SATA driver) BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA

There are two drivers for Serial ATA controllers.

The main driver, "libata", exists inside the SCSI subsystem
and supports most modern SATA controllers.

The IDE driver (which you are currently configuring) supports
a few first-generation SATA controllers.

In order to eliminate conflicts between the two subsystems,
this config option enables the IDE driver's SATA support.
Normally this is disabled, as it is preferred that libata
supports SATA controllers, and this (IDE) driver supports
PATA controllers.

If unsure, say N.

For me helped to select this option in ATA device support section which was not included in 2.6.18.

Code:

<*> ATA device support
       <*>   Intel PIIX/ICH SATA support
