Please disregard my last message. I think I may have figured it out. Thanks anyway, though.

After installing Modular Xorg following the Wiki and Handbook rules, I had the same error:
Code:
(II) LoadModule: "fglrx"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so
(II) Module fglrx: vendor="FireGL - ATI Technologies Inc."
   compiled for 6.8.99.8, module version = 8.24.8
   Module class: X.Org Video Driver
   ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 0.7
(EE) module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (1)
(II) UnloadModule: "fglrx"
(II) Unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (module requirement mismatch, 0)

I read about starting X with -ignoreABI option, so I modified /usr/kde/3.5/share/config/kdm/kdmrc, putting the line:
Code:
ServerArgsLocal=-nolisten tcp -ignoreABI

Now, the problem is similar, but different (on the fglrx module setup):
Code:
(II) Loading extension GLX
(II) LoadModule: "fglrx"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so
(II) Module fglrx: vendor="FireGL - ATI Technologies Inc."
        compiled for 6.8.99.8, module version = 8.24.8
        Module class: X.Org Video Driver
        ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 0.7
(WW) module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (1)
[R200Setup] X version mismatch - detected X.org 7.1.-1.903, required X.org 7.0.-1.8
(II) UnloadModule: "fglrx"
(II) Unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (module requirement mismatch, 0)

Has anybody solved it? You can take a look to this topic too: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-3332337.html#3332337

NVidia just released their 8762 drivers. They do not support the xorg-x11 7.1 ABI.

According to NVidia reps on the nvnews forums, this support won't be there until the 9xxx series of drivers -- see this thread for details.

I run 903 now, and the nvidia drivers (not newest), but I think they work...?

I haven't tested it, because I'm not at my computer, but I've started kdm via ssh and my xorg.0.log seems ok?

I am trying to set up xgl with nvidia card. I faced the same problems e.i. font disapearance. Downgraded xorg-server and xf86-input-mouse and keyboard- that fixed font problem.
Does It mean that my xgl efforts are useless till nvidia new xorg 7 compatible driver release?

Xgl works fine with the older xorg-server so if you are still having problems they are not related to the server version.

For some people the drivers load but don't work properly (font problems and the like). For many others (including me) the server crashes on startup. I would be interested to find out why some people like you (and Lokheed, see earlier in this thread) are able to run at all given the incompatibility between the server and the drivers.

What xorg-server are you using?
Code:
emerge xorg-server -pv

right about now I'm using the newest one 1.1.0, but I've just found out that the problem doesn't manifest itself in the same way as ati (whinging about wrong ABI version), but it shows in renderaccel being broken. KDE font's being rendered improperly.

So Nvidia+Xorg-7.1 should work if disabling RenderAccel option in Xorg?
Code:
 Option      "RenderAccel" "false"

But what about reply from Nvidia guy, that serie 8xxx doesnt support xorg-7.1 yet - http://nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=893819&postcount=2

Ok here we go. First of all I upgraded to latest nvidia and followed with upgrade to XOrg-7.1:
Code:
media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.8762
media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.8762
media-libs/mesa-6.5-r3
x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.0
x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse-1.1.0-r1
x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard-1.1.0
x11-apps/mesa-progs-6.5

Then I added
Code:
 Option      "RenderAccel" "false"

XOrg-7.1 booted without a problem and I didnt realized nothing strange. Only redrawing of windows in KDE seems to be slower, but its due disabling RenderAccel. After I enabled RenderAccel, restarting xserver and fonts were gone. Nothing in Kmenu, only icons .... I wasnt able to open xorg.conf and disable that nonworking option with Krusader, becouse of missing fonts EVERYWHERE. OK, what in xorg.log? In both cases, they are same, only if enabling renderaccel, at the bottom there is:
Code:
(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)
(II) No APM support in BIOS or kernel
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "800x600"
(II) Mouse0: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded
(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)
(II) No APM support in BIOS or kernel
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "800x600"
(II) Loading extension NV-GLX
(II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA 3D Acceleration Architecture Initialized
(II) NVIDIA(0): Using the NVIDIA 2D acceleration architecture
(==) RandR enabled
(II) Initializing extension GLX
    xkb_keycodes             { include "xfree86+aliases(qwertz)" };
    xkb_types                { include "complete" };
    xkb_compatibility        { include "complete" };
    xkb_symbols              { include "pc/pc(pc105)+pc/cz" };
    xkb_geometry             { include "pc(pc105)" };

And what if I grep xorg.log for EE?
Code:
(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
(EE) ============= WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING =============
(EE) This server has a video driver ABI version of 1.0 but this
(EE)     driver is designed to work with versions before 1.0.  The
(EE)     driver will continue to load, but may behave strangely.
(EE)     Please check http://www.nvidia.com/ for driver updates or
(EE)     downgrade to an X server with a supported driver ABI.
(EE) ===========================================================
(EE) Error loading keymap /usr/share/X11/xkb/compiled/server-0.xkm

And the resolution for me? Although after few minutes with version 7.1, I didnt noticed any problem, I am going back to 7.0, becouse redrawing of windows is sensible slower (becouse of necessery RenderAccel=false).

EDITED: I am missing fonts in CODE/QUOTE with Konqueror. Also running wincfg - no fonts,

I've got the same error as mentioned in the first post with the newest ATI-Drivers 8.25.8. Take a look here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-465298.html

I think it's safe to say that almost nobody running binary nvidia or ati drivers is going to have a happy experience with the new xorg-server. So short of politely emailing nvidia or ati to encourage them to a. release compatible drivers soon and b. open-source the damn things so the community can improve the drivers more quickly than their no-doubt-talented developers can all by themselves, all we can do is wait.

I heard about this note somewhere but today I made an update emerge -uD world and now I got:
Code:

* x11-base/xorg-server
     Installed:           1.1.0
* x11-base/xorg-x11
     Installed:           7.1_rc2
* media-video/nvidia-glx
     Installed:           1.0.8762

xorg.conf:
Code:

    Driver         "nvidia"

Then I run some 3D game i.e. quake3 and everything seems going fine, so I don't get it what's wrong?

I've run the latest xorg-server (1.1 and even before that the 7.1 cvs) and nvidia binary with NO problems. I don't do anything special.. I do use xgl instead of Xorg (though xgl starts xorg in the background anyways). I do remember that fonts were all screwed up using Xorg-server 1.1 (and cvs) though.

I've read on the nvidia forum that only nvidia >=90xx drivers will work with new xorg's... So we have to wait some time :/ But I've also read that new drivers for windows are about to be released so there is some hope :)
