hey guys, I was given an Ultra Sparc1 box, no keyboard yet, but wondering how Gentoo runs on one of these old beasts, I was also thinking Solaris 10 or something on there... any ideas from the board?

Solaris 10 won't go on that box.. it needs a 64Bit UltraSPARC.

Gentoo will go on okay.. it'll just to take ages to compile!!

:-)

it has something like 167mhz and 128 megs of memory... the hard drive seems to be f'ed, it wouldn't finish synching got a panic trying to get to the drive, anyone know if these drives are proprietary (sp?) to sun... can i swap in any scsi-1 drive?

another thing, it says 32 bit default, capable of 64 bit, using boot(m) i believe... i'm trying to find documentation on this old ass box all over, can't find a thing, is there a bios on these things much like x86 machines? thanks guys.

The UltraSPARC I chips (not to be confused with the Ultra 1 workstations) are indeed 64 bits, but they suffered from design flaws that made Solaris have to use a 32 bit kernel on them. The Linux kernel works around this issue, so it's not a problem.

Solaris 10 requires an UltraSPARC II CPU or higher to run (which no Ultra 1 workstation has).

Exactly so - it will run gentoo - dont expect quick compile times but for a home server / router it would do great.

is it still doing the compiles ? lol

I know it takes some time - but it should make an OK box in the end, a small server or possibly firewall etc - dont think I would want to compile or run X on one tho!
