As far as I know the ATi drivers don't support OpenGL in X yet...I could be wrong though.

3d does not work with the default xfree radeon drivers on new radeon's, but it does work with ati drivers ;)

Kind of like the native Nvidia / Nvidia drivers thing ? I mean the Nvidia drivers work alot better than the native Nvidia driver ...

I would be interested to know as I am looking to upgrade my video card in the future and the only reason I am leaning toward Nvidia based cards is that the OpenGL support seems to be better. If the ATi OpenGL support is as "good" as the Nvidia support I think I might just get a Radeon 9700 :)

while nvidia's drivers on both linux and windows are WAY better than ati's drivers, ati's drivers are getting there (and fairly fast too). And I get better performance on linux (and way way better on windows) with my 9700 pro than my gf4400 (overclocked to higher than 4600).
