Posted: Tue Aug 16, 2005 9:48 pm Post subject: Kaffeine and Amarok broken after "emerge --update world |
|
|
After a long-overdue world update, a fair few things broke but only Kaffeine and Amarok refuse to work after many hours spent fixing. There are other threads in the forum that relate loosely to my issue but the suggested fixes have not worked and none mention these problems in conjunction. I believe they are related. Kde was also updated from 3.3 to 3.4.
On launching amarok, I receive the error:
Code: | amaroK could not find any sound-engine plugins. amaroK is now updating the KDE configuration database. Please wait a couple of minutes, then restart amaroK.
If this does not help, it is likely that amaroK is installed under the wrong prefix, please fix your installation using:
$ cd /path/to/amarok/source-code/
$ su -c "make uninstall"
$ ./configure --prefix=`kde-config --prefix` && su -c "make install"
$ kbuildsycoca
$ amarok
More information can be found in the README file. For further assistance join us at #amarok on irc.freenode.net. |
the console output is as follows
Code: | amaroK: [Loader] Starting amarokapp..

The app then quits after okaying the error message.
Running Kaffeine gives the following error:
"Loading of player part '' failed." and ".desktop not found in search path."
then "Could not find mime type application/octet-stream"
then "No mime types installed"
The output from the console is as follows:
Code: | kio (KSycoca): WARNING: Found version 75, expecting version 79 or higher.

The app then opens but without the player part - only the playlist is displayed.
It would appear from the similarities between the errors that unregistered mime types might be the problem and I think this might be due to the update of kde.
I had wondered if arts might be the issue (this too was updated), but other apps like xmms work without any problem.
I have tried many suggested solutions - re-emerging the apps with different USE flags (arts, gstreamer, -opengl).
I tried removing config files in ~/.kde/share/services and ~/kde/share/apps and running again.
I tried grabbing the kaffeine.desktop and kaffeine.desktop.part file from /usr/share/... and copying them into ~/.kde/share/...
Any help on this matter wold be greatly appreciated.
Apologies for the length of this post and masses of console output. I have abridged repeated lines and replaced them with "..." _________________ In Italy for 30 yrs under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed, but produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, & the Renaissance. Does nobody even have a suggestion?
I'll give anything a go, even a vague pointer towards what I should be checking or where I might go to do some research would be great.
Again, any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated - with no movies and no tunes my gentoo bx seems like half the machine it used to be.
Thanks. _________________ In Italy for 30 yrs under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed, but produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, & the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had 500 yrs of democracy & peace & produced what? The cuckoo clock. - Harry Lime |

Enter "which amarok" or "which kaffeine". If the path you get is still pointing to your old kde installation (/usr/kde/3.3/bin/) I think you have to update your $PATH variable by editing /etc/profile. |

This happens here with the newest version of Amarok also.
I only have Kde 3.4 and the which amarok points to the right place.
I'm going to have a play around and see if I can come with up anything. |

"which amarok" points to the correct path.
I had this idea that it might be a problem with mimetypes (if anyone can definitively say that this is entirely irrelevant, please do so and save me barking up the wrong tree).
I found that the kde mime library was not installed, although it is part of kde-base.
I emerged kde-base/mimelib , along with app-misc/mime-types to see if this would do the job. No joy.
I am stabbing cluelessly at tangents now in the hope I can hit upon something by accident. _________________ In Italy for 30 yrs under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed, but produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, & the Renaissance. OK so I managed to get Amarok to run as root - which meant that I probably had a permissions problem somewhere.
Cruised around and found that my /var/tmp/kdecache-user/ksycoca file was owned by root:root so I chowned it back to myself (I'm not entirely convinced that this is a good thing) and then re-run Amarok from the command line. This then showed that kbuildsycoca ran through its process upon the next Amarok crash and then on the next execute Amarok ran fine.
Not sure if this will come back when I re-login or not though, guess I will find out later on (in the middle of doing some other things right now so can't restart X). |

im having the exact same problem. amarok will run as root and the install path is pointing to the right place. i took a look at the kdecache-user file you were talking about and mine was already owned by my user. did anyone ever find out how to solve this problem? |

I got around this error by simply re-compiling amarok..
But now I have a different issue - it starts, I can go through directories, and look at all my artists/tracks, with the sidebars, but when I try the options, or try to change a playlist, or even play a song, it freezes up.
Anyone got ideas how to fix this? _________________ When I was given Gentoo, I was told that the forums are my friend. |

That issue about mime-types is usually tied to having the wrong version of kde in rc.conf and is known to cause problems with some applications. |

I downgraded to amarok 1.2.4, then back up to 1.3.7, and that fixed it.
It works fine now! _________________ When I was given Gentoo, I was told that the forums are my friend. |

Okay I updated Amarok and have the same problem as reported in the first post. The problem is probably created trough the wrong path. Amarok is in /usr/kde/3.4/bin/amarok, but I'm still using KDE 3.3. How do I fix the problem (running Amarok as root works)?
Thanks for your help. |

I'd just use kde 3.4 and remove 3.3, honestly it works so much better that I don't see a reason to use 3.3, not to mention the security problems that have been corrected. |

I had the same problem and solved it this way:
The var/tmp/kdecache-user/ksycoca was already owned by me, but the I was not allowed to excute (the rights were 644).
So ich made
Code: | chmod 744 var/tmp/kdecache-user/ksycoca |
And it worked like a charm.
Hope this will solve your Prolems too. |

I had this problem for almost 2 weeks
all I had to do was to choose KDE 3.5 in GDM instead of 3.4
I'm dumb,
or not... |

I had the same kind of a problem too with Amarok. I accidentally removed the kdemultimedia-arts package during "emerge --depclean". After re-emerging that package Amarok started again normally. |

I also suffer from this problem (no sound plugins found) :( Tons of mime errors and amaroK only runs as root user. This is only the case with the 1.4-branch, <= 1.3.9 run fine. To get 1.4 to runs as regular user, I have to copy the ksycoca file from /tmp/kde-root/ to my /tmp/kde-user/ folder. I have to do this after every reboot though.
I tried all suggestions from every mime/ksycoca threads I could find, but nothing fixes this. Emerging kdemultimedia-arts seems kind of pointless for me, since I have -arts for everything. I do have kde-3.5.2 set in rc.conf (Though I do not use an ?dm, I start xgl from command line. Tried kdm, but didn't solve the problem). |

Exactly, I've the same problem I love amarok but it's rather annoying to cp ksycoca from root to user every boot. If somebody can find any solution to this problem please let me know :] _________________ -v- |

Found another aspect to this problem:
/var/tmp/kdecache-user is where the actual files are stored under Gentoo... i had to copy across... At first i thought removing the kdecache dir had fixed the problem, but it hadn't... i just hadn't gotten to that window.... copying across from root's kdecache fixed it.... hopefully someone more kde savvy than me can figure this out...

Me too... I've just made a clean install on my new laptop, and I've found that everything which installs into /usr and uses plugins will fail. This includes amaroK and KDevelop. Installing amaroK from source into /usr/kde/3.5 works. Running KDevelop through an ssh -X root@localhost works. Copying /var/tmp/kdecache-root/ksycoca over to my user's kdecache will let me start KDevelop, but breaks just about everything else, needing a kbuildsycoca to restore normal operation.
This is with kde-base/kde-meta-3.5.2, freshly installed, and X running both through kdm with the KDE-3.5 session and through xgl from the command line. KDEDIR is empty and KDEDIRS=/usr. I've tried all the KDEDIRS combinations mentioned, none of which make any difference. |

I'm not sure if that's the solution but I've emerged baselayout and configured UDEV with this article and now amaroK works without problems :] _________________ -v- |

Guys, I think I found the problem solver!!
I think a directory, /usr/share/services, don't know from what package, gets installed incorrectly, not readable from noone else than root.
Setting it to a+rx gets krita to work!!!!
Try it with amaroK, please! |

yes, it seems like this could be the error... since there are amaroK files in there my user could not open
but i cannot really tell if it worked, since i did the copyover from kdecache-root to kdecache-user within this session. have to take a look whenever i restart X (maybe in 1 or 2 days ) |
