This is on a KT400 motherboard if that helps.

The drivers from ATI don't support 4.3.x as far as I know. To downgrade to 4.2.x you need to type:

Code:

emerge xfree-4.2.1-r2.ebuild

Yeah big radeon probs here aswell atleast... 3d stuff in x-free

I did what was posted here and it was posted in loads of other topics aswell I completely removed my kernel and modules etc. then tried reinstalling now I'm getting a good load of unresolved symbols. My agpgart gives a few and modprobe radeon gives like tripple that. I compiled pretty much everything I have xcept for filesystem and stuff I don't change anywayz. So I'm kind of thinking that the radeon problem starts with not having agpgart loaded. So I'd first need to fix that. I have both in my module.autload (where they also give an error)

BadGuy: What radeon card do you have? Have you definetly compiled agpgart in as a module, and selected the appropriate chipset support for it (depending on your motherboard).

Mow: Not sure if you will need to bother about the DRM if you are using a 9700 Pro.

Hmmm, not quite true. The 7500 mobility acceleration works natively in X, you do not need the ati-drivers package. Compile the DRM and Radeon support in the kernel and agpgart. Use the "radeon" driver.

The quality of these drivers are not as good as the ATI official drivers, but they are OSS.

Desktop: 1700 Athlon XP w/ ATI Radeon 9000 pro
Laptop: 2ghz Mobile p4 w/ ATI Radeon 7500 mobility

The laptop gets about 1/4 the FPS on glx gears. I don't have the numbers right now, but if you are terribly interested I'll test it again some day.

Not quite. I am using 4.3 with both an ATI Radeon 9000 pro and ATI Radeon 7500 mobilty.

The 9000 pro uses the ati-drivers package in gentoo. Then mobility uses the native X drivers for "radeon".

Did you uncomment the DRI section at the bottom of XF86Config?

I have a radeon 9000 on a p3 700 About what should I be getting in GLXGears? I currently get about 66 FPS. I'm not going to play 3d games on this machine so should I care enough to get everything working on the 9000? I will be watching dvd's and divx movies, will not having the drivers working affect the performance of the dvd's?

yes ........ it's got to be a DRI issue. If I turn it off then I can get into X. If I turn it on I get nothing but a black screen ......... or the errors I posted above.

3D drivers are different from 2D drivers not having your 3d drivers working at 100% isn't much of a problem when viewing DVD's and divx movies. Although I do find it a bit troubeling that my radeon 7500 gets about 150 fps without the right drivers. But then again it won't affect your dvd/divx viewing...

stu:
I have the radeon 7500 (mobility). I tried about everything agpgart as module and compiled in the kernel. When compiling as module I get alot of those unresolved symbol errors like I said. I'll post the whole error soon (need to find a utp cable to hook my lappy up ;))

I strugled the whole weekend to get my Radeon 7500 Mobility to use hardware rendering.

It turns out that I at first compiled in the DRI stuff in the kernel. Bad mistake! :) So what ever I did of compiling and rekonpiling of xfree and xfree-drm, noting helped... Until I did from console:

rm -rf /lib/modules/2.4.20
rm -rf /usr/src/linux*

emerge unmerge xfree-drm
emerge unmerge xfree

emerge vanilla-sources (reconfigured, recompiled, reinstalled)
emerge xfree
emerge xfree-drm

After this I've been getting >1400 fps in glxgears :)

But I did encounter som hangups when shutting down OpenGL software and when logging out from KDE. I fixed this by downloading and installing the latest snapshot from http://dri.sourceforge.net/

(I used the one posted on the 18.05.2003)

Hope this can help others with similar problems :)

Cheers Joco

First I could not find much gentoo documentation on this either. However, I downloaded the drivers themselves from ATI's site and found the trick is that you have to use the 2.4.18 kernel.

Code:

emerge \=sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-2.4.18

In the kernel you should have CONFIG_MTRR (under Processor type and features), (under character devices) CONFIG_AGP as a module and the chipset, my motherboard has the VIA chipset, so I also set CONFIG_AGP_VIA. Make sure DRI is not set (I think I said to set it before, my bad). Once you have configured the kernel build it and install it (and modules). Test it out to make sure it works.

Once that is done emerge Xfree86 and the ati-drivers, I've used the explicit versions here, since I know they work, but I don't see why the current versions would not work.

Code:

emerge xfree-4.3.0-r2
emerge ati-drivers-2.9.12

Once that is done (get some icecream, xfree takes a couple minutes *cough* hours) we need to setup X. You can either do this by hand (not reccomended) or use fglrxconfig. This will allow you to setup X in the same way xf86config allows you to setup X.

Code:

fglrxconfig

Once you have it configured for your card, look through the XF86Config for these lines:

Under the section modules you need to load "glx" and "dri".
Code:

    Load        "glx"   # libglx.a
    Load        "dri"   # libdri.a

Under the section device you should have something similar to:
Code:

Section "Device"
    Identifier                          "ATI Graphics Adapter"
    Driver                              "fglrx"
# === disable PnP Monitor  ===
    #Option                              "NoDDC"
# === disable/enable XAA/DRI ===
    Option "no_accel"                   "no"
    Option "no_dri"                     "no"
# === Fire GL DDX driver module specific settings ===
# === Screen Management ===
    Option "DesktopSetup"               "0x00000000"
    Option "Display2"                   "0"
    Option "HSync2"                     "unspecified"
    Option "VRefresh2"                  "unspecified"
    Option "GammaCorrectionI"           "0x00000000"
    Option "GammaCorrectionII"          "0x00000000"
# === OpenGL specific profiles/settings ===
    Option "Capabilities"               "0x00000000"
# === Video Overlay for the Xv extension ===
#    Option "VideoOverlay"               "on"
# === OpenGL Overlay ===
# Note: When OpenGL Overlay is enabled, Video Overlay
#       will be disabled automatically
    Option "OpenGLOverlay"              "off"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"    # vendor=1002, device=496e
    Screen 0
EndSection

In this section I think I remember the default for BusID was "PCI:1:0:1", you should change it to "PCI:1:0:0" if when you try to start X you get an error of No screens found (which you probably will, so go ahead and change it first).

Once you have set that up, restart the X server.

Code:

/etc/init.d/xdm restart

We can test to see if the modules loaded with:
Code:

%lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by    Tainted: P
fglrx                 160936   8
agpgart                14088   0  (autoclean) (unused)

Get used to having a tainted kernel. With a tainted kernel you will never be able to send a kernel bug report.

Also, we can check to see if we actually accelerated by doing the command:

Code:

% glxinfo  | grep "OpenGL renderer string"
OpenGL renderer string: Radeon 9000/Mobility Fire GL 8800 Pro Prototype DDR Athlon (3DNow!) (FireGL)

If it says "Mesa" anywhere in that string, sorry, no dice. It didn't work. Post here and I'll see what I can do.

If all that happend, congrats. If not, post a reply here and I will see if I can figure out what I might have missed.

Here are the ever important glxgears numbers: ~2265 fps on an Athlon 1700+ w/ 768MB PC2100 w/ ATI Radeon 9000 pro. YMMV.

Good luck.

Oh perhaps you're right then, it is IGP320/330/340/350 that I think aren't supported yet. Hopefully that will change soon.

I don't see much wrong with that concerning vid drivers ? It does however detect radeon M7 while I have a radeon 7500 but the rest seems normal...

Dmesg:

Not much really wrong there neither except for the fact that it seems to run the old gentoo kernel wich doesn't apply here really... But it still runs so I dunno if anyone knows how to fix that? Would be good.

I'm quite sure my xfree config is good so I won't post that

I'm not THAT sure about the kernel so if someone with the radeon 7500 could msg me with the precise kernel settings I would love to take a look at them... Just messag me for that.

glxgears doesn't give me much fps just 268 and it still gives the infamous:

So more idea's would be welcome. I am thinking I did something wrong in my kernel but I just can't figure out what it is... I put in all the right settings according the posts on this forum

A few things that jump out at me:
BadGuy wrote:
(WW) RADEON(0): [dri] Some DRI features disabled because of version mismatch.
[dri] radeon.o kernel module version is 1.1.1 but 1.3.1 or later is preferred.

(II) RADEON(0): [drm] failure adding irq handler, there is a device already using that irq

(II) RADEON(0): [drm] Kernel module too old (1.1) for agp heap manager

However the existence of this line:

...seems to mean DRI sould work. Did you add the Section "DRI" stuff to your XF86Config? You have Load glx and Load dri in there too? Tried opengl-update xfree?

If those all are done then maybe a hardware reconfiguration is necessary, like IRQ changes or something.

Bad guy:

I don't think you have MTRR compiled into your kernel, look at this line in your x log:

Code:
(WW) RADEON(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum
(II) RADEON(0): Primary V_BIOS segment is: 0xc000
(WW) System lacks support for changing MTRRs

Now, I don't like the looks of that BIOS checksum, but I would check that you have MTRR compiled into your kernel, cause I don't think you do.
