|
|
I used gentoo as server OS and never used as a dekstop replacement but now things are changing as I bought a laptop and decided to migrate from winxp to linux completely. I have a really lame question... Which programs do you usually use? For example, "E-mail client - Evolution, Browser - Firefox" and so on... I would really appreciate your replies because I want to get some basic software up for common work and tasks...
It would be better to structurize answer as a list.
Currently I decided to use:
KDE
Evolution
Openoffice
XMMS2
P.S. if there are any related links please post them... |

e-mail - clintside - thunderbird
- serverside - pine
browser - firefox, links
wordprocessor - openoffice, emacs
texteditor - nano
misc. - wmmemmon, wmpower, wmtop, wmnd, wmpinboard, wmcalc, wmbiff
p2p - amule
there are zillions of nice little dockapps for just about everything. Theres a site dockapps.org or something to that effect that has a lot, most of which are in portage. I prefer having dock apps running than actual programs as the work really well with fluxbox's slit. They persist between workspaces, acting almost like a heads up display for you computers vitals. |

These are some of the well-known apps I use nearly everyday:
Fluxbox
Firefox & Opera
Audacious (I tried XMMS2 some time ago, but there weren't any good GUIs around)
Sylpheed-Claws - e-mail & newsreader
GAIM
MLDonkey & Azureus - P2P
Xine - movie player
OpenOffice
Gkrellm2 - system monitor
Xchat - irc client
K3B & Nero Burning Rom
Xpdf - slim pdf viewer
GVIM
and these some of the not-so-well-known apps:
yeahconsole - great quake-style console app (not in portage yet)
devilspie - "A window-matching utility"
pornview - great image viewing program, not only for pr0n |

I am a KDE guy - I just like the look and feel of qt. So eventually I come to use mostly (but not exclusively) applications using qt.
desktop environment - KDE 3.5
wordprocessor - openoffice
texteditor - kate
photo/picture - gwenview
image editing - gimp2
p2p - amule
wireless networking - NetworkManager (with gentopia overlay)
instant messaging - kopete
irc client - konversation
email client - kmail
browser - firefox 1.5 (you should check out the hugh amount of wonderful extensions, e.g.: flashgot, tab catalog, adblock plus, googlepreview, chatzilla, fireftp, mediaplayerconnectivity, videodownloader)
media player - kplayer
music player - amarok
reference manager - jabref
cd/dvd burning - k3b
superkaramba extensions: liquid weather, ubermon, skopete (sadly, a.t.m. superkaramba does not really work with Xgl, which I use quite often ("often" and not "always", because I still experience some video playback problems) _________________ www.eff.org - www.fsf.org - www.againsttcpa.com - Video |

This must be a dupe of some sort, and should be in OTW anyway.
As for my frequently used apps:
KDE (lot of those bells and whistles, including: konqueror, k3b, kpdf, kontact, amarok, konsole, kopete, konversation, koffice, kwrite, kate, quanta+, super-karamba, and ofcourse lots more).
Firefox (still have a need for it, but konqueror is winning terrain).
Boinc (more info)
Portage and related tools
Wine (it is getting nicer these days, and I still love Red Alert 2 too much to leave it behind )
And more stuff I forgot about I guess...

I can think of at least two threads like this, and several which are similar. |

KDE as a desktop
Mozilla Thunderbird for email (as I share a mailbox over the network and the mail client running on my windows box is also thunderbird)
Konqueror for web browsing
rTorrent as a torrent client
Openoffice.org
XMMS for music
MPlayer for video playback
Kate for writing code
nano for text editing (distribution default, i usually never change those unless it is really unpleasant to use) |
