Ok, I had a version of Mandrake linux running, i wanted to get rid of it for gentoo, so i went into konsole and typed lilo -U. This was according to the documentation that had come with mandrake. After that, i logged in as root and deleted the partitions. I was duel booting at the time (linux-windows), so when i restarted i expected to automatically load windows, however it did not, LILO still booted up. It gives me the choice between linux or windows, but when i click linux, nothing happens (it is deleted). Now without linux, is it possible to delete LILO and get back my original MBR??? _________________ I am cool. |

If all you want is to be able to boot Windows, then get the install CD and use fixmbr. It will overwrite the MBR and, if nothing else is wrong, allow you to boot into windows. Alternatively, you could install Gentoo, learn a whole lot more than you might have wanted to about linux, and reclaim that wasted space occupied by your Windows partition. |

Don't double-post. And this isn't about Gentoo so it should go in Off The Wall. _________________ meow. |

If it is about preparations to install Gentoo, it is fine here. _________________ Please read our FAQ Forum, it answers many of your questions.

omp2, during the process of installing gentoo you will install a bootloader, so it doesn't matter if lilo is on or not. if it's not installed, the gentoo guide will tell you how to install grub. if it is installed and you followed the guide and tried to install grub, it will still be installed, thus, consequently, it doesn't matter whether or not lilo is installed. just proceed with the installation and everything will be fine... _________________ "Confident, lazy, cocky, dead." -- Felix Jongleur, Otherland
