I get some wiered errors after sudo emerge --update world. At the top of my command line, the line on top of the one that lists my computer name and kernel version, gives the following error:

/etc/host.conf: line 24: bad command `mdns off'

further more, after typing in my user name, I get the following before the password prompt:
Quote:
configuration error - unkonwn item `FAILLOG_ENAB` (notify administrator)
configuration error - unkonwn item `LASTLOG_ENAB` (notify administrator)
configuration error - unkonwn item `MOTD_FILE` (notify administrator)
configuration error - unkonwn item `FTMP_FILE` (notify administrator)
configuration error - unkonwn item `ENV_ROOTPATH` (notify administrator)
configuration error - unkonwn item `PASS_MIN_LEN` (notify administrator)
configuration error - unkonwn item `CHFN_AUTH` (notify administrator)

I'm a gentoo noob and I don't understand for sure what happend. I'm guessing that it has something to do with the protection that prevents the config files from being clobbered. I need help understanding what the problem is and how to fix it. Thx in advance.

This looks like the same problem:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-366499-highlight-notify+administrator.html

It involves fixing /etc/login.defs after updating pam
