I am using gentoo for three years by now, first on athlon xp machines, now on two athlon64.
What I used to like most is the great stability of a gentoo-system, I recorded uptimes of about a hundred days without any problems, I only had to reboot for hardware upgrades. Since some time, this is all gone. I do not know why, now I am glad if I can have an uptime for two or three days - and I did not change to ~amd64, on the contrary, I became more and more conservative in USE-flag and keywords usage.
I am thinking seriously about migrating to FreeBSD by now. Does anybody of you have similar experiences? Whats your idea and opinion about general system stability? Or am I all wrong? |

My amd64 system would be perfectly stable if not for ATI/nvidia video card related problems. The most recent (unstable) driver update seems to have fixed kernel panics that the last one caused though, so I'm back to being stable. I'm also probably running with about half my packages unstable.
I noticed you're using the NVIDIA flag, and one of your links was to an nvidia problem. There's nothing gentoo can do about the shitty drivers supplied by nvidia and ati. If you want a truely stable system, you won't use those drivers (and consequently won't be able to play games, but that suggests you're using a home machine, in which case why care about the occasional reboot?) |

I only have like 6 USE flags..... But thats just me. Uptime == 25 days or so (and thats after a kernel upgrade // reboot).

| Mine's so stable that when I do reboot I find I have changed enough things that sometimes it won't boot! I don't think I have ever had to reboot my system because of stability issues. |

So I have talked to some people, mostly windows users. They told me any OS needed some top be reinstalled every now and then. IMHO thats *bullshit*.
Sorry for swearing. Ladies, please look away and don't think bad of me.
However, they have some point. Sometimes it might be less work just reinstalling things than to track down some complicated issue and fix it. I don't like the idea, though. |

It depends how well you take care of your system. Windows, yes, it needs regular reinstalls.
Binary distros on which you don't do any manual compilation? Shouldn't unless there's a massive change in the next release.
Gentoo? Depende how much you play. I got my laptop in such a state it needed a reinstall to make any sense of it.. (plus I wanted to put a crazy partition table into effect) |

Windows needs to be reinstalled now and then, because it gets really slow after a while. Defragmentation program of Windows doesn't resolve all fragmentation, and you can't get all stuff out when doing an uninstall of a program for example. Best resolution is a complete reinstall. But Gentoo's packagemanager can get rid of all the files he created and because most Linux filesystems have less fragmentation, Gentoo is a year later still as fast as it is from the time of the installation.
