I was wondering how you people pronounce it. Some people I have heard say 'et-see,' some say 'etcetera,' ands some even say 'e-t-c'

From what I have heard, the 'real' way is 'et-see.' Fell free to chime in.

I used to say "e-t-c" until I took a class in Solaris (yes, same class from the "how do you get home?" thread) and the instructor told us the True Way is "et-see" :) I picked up a lot in that class :D

It's one of those thoings that i always used to think i could pronounce. Then i read theis thread and realized i can't. Oh, well i guess i'll use et-see (except i think e-t-c will be more recognized)

I don't say "/etc" because none of the people I talk to (i.e. not type to -- some people fail to make that distinction ;)) use *nix. It's sad, really...

I rarely say it out loud, but in my head, it sounds like "ets", like et cetera without the 'etera'.

When I say it in my head, it's always "ets" and "pross" (like the beginning of "procedure" or "process", not like in "those tennis players are pros"). I don't think I've said them out loud.

Then again, I always pronounce warez as "wah-rez" and OS X as "oh es ecks" in my head, so what do I know?

I agree with klieber. "/etc" is et-see and "/proc" is prok. Almost everyone that I talk to about computers tries to phonic-ize the standard directory names when talking about them. Thus, when we talk about "/usr/local/src" we say "user, local, source."

Very surprised to see that almost 50% (at this time) pronounce it e-t-c. I've never heard it prounounced other than et-see. Maybe people can just look at this link http://h0050ba3f874e.ne.client2.attbi.com/unix.shtml, if they have any questions about other commands. You really don't want to look like that much of a n00b when/if you talk to someone who actually knows their sh*t.

e - t - c and prok

As long as we understand each other it doesn't matter ;)
But writing is used more than talking for many of us, so anyway... *grin*

I'd like to pronounce it as in Prozac (the pill against depressions) because /proc makes you happy anyway...

This is one of the very few "shorts" in Unix I do pronounce as written (i.e. e-t-c). For the rest, I can never imagine saying u-s-r or usr instead of user, or o-p-t... I wanted to use etcetera but most people look at me in a really confused manner when I do that, so I stick to the basics.
