PostPosted: Sat Apr 22, 2006 1:06 pm    Post subject: Xorg and the radeon driver no longer work [SOLVED] Reply with quote

=====================HOW IT WAS SOLVED==========================

This problem was due to xorg-server not playing nicely with ATI drivers.

I did this to solve my issue:

Code:

 echo "=x11-base/xorg-server-1.0.99.901-r1" >> /etc/portage/package.mask

and then,

Code:

emerge =x11-base/xorg-server-1.0.2-r3

and xorg-server and ATI drivers once again worked together.

==============================================================
so as to not duplicate an "ATI and XORG don't work" I'll explain my problem here.

After a recent update, X just stopped working.

Here is the relavent xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files

Modular X was working for a little while for me. But now, this is what I get. I down graded the ATI drivers thinking there was some issue there, but no luck. I haven't had any GUI since Thursday...and I'm running out of time.

Help please.

I've split this from X problem since it seems to be a different problem.

It looks like a lot of modules aren't being found. Do you have any ModulePath lines in /etc/X11/xorg.conf? If so, try removing them.

I have this very same problem :(

This seems to be the problem:
Code:
...
(EE) module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (1)
...

Oh, that's a point... Are either of you using xorg-server-1.0.99? If so, don't - it breaks the nVidia and ATI binary drivers - see this post from the gentoo-dev mailing list: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.gentoo.devel/37483/focus=37483

Yup, thanks for the tip. However, anyone else with this problem be careful, as xf86-input-mouse-1.1.x (and keyboard, and probably others) are not compatible with the xorg-server-1.0.x, and throw similar "mo=odule ABI major version" errors then segfault.

Albert_Alligator: Remember to add "Solved" to the title if this works for you also.

Ok, I'm going to see if that works. I'll mark it solved if xorg-server turns out to be the problem for me.

I had the same problem and tried to fix it by switching to xorg-server-1.0.2-r3, as suggested in the first post. But now I get a kernel panic, so be careful!

Check your Xorg log and any messages that appear when you start just plain "X" on a command line, for any signs of "module ABI version" problems, and emerge the corresponding modules for your xorg-server.

THe problem is that the xf86-video-ati driver has to be updated to version 6.6. :) If you install xorg-server-1.0.99.1 then xf86-video-ati-6.6 also needs to be installed.

Moved from Desktop Environments to Duplicate Threads in favour of xorg-server-1.0.99.x ABI breaks nvidia/ati binary drivers.
