I'd like to use fluxbox instead of KDE. I can get into fluxbox and run non-KDE apps just fine since my path is set to: /bin:usr/bin:usr/X11r6/bin:/usr/local/bin. The thing I don't understand is why fluxbox isn't using my paths defined in /etc/profile and /etc/profile.env where my KDE (and other) paths are defined.

try creating a .bashrc file in youre home directory that contains one line:
source /etc/profile

your problem is probably that only login shells will read /etc/profile
the extra shells you start such as in xterm will only read .bashrc (if it exists)

Thank you - this solved my terminal woes, but now I have a more refined question. I would like to be able to add entries to .fluxbox/menu without having to put the entire path in for each program. Where is there an path setting for fluxbox? For example fluxbox will find progs in /usr/X11R6/bin, but not /usr/kde/3/bin. Both are in /etc/profile (or profile.env).

Thanks

there shouldnt be any need to set paths for fluxbox...
it is just a windows manager. i wouldnt think this is a fluxbox related problem.
