I'm a SPARC newbie. What's the state of Gentoo on an SS20? Mine is a quad 125Mhz CPU model (2x dual Ross 125's) with 448MB RAM, CDROM, and a couple of SCSI/Ethernet combo cards installed.
It currently has no OS loaded and I'm wondering whether to load Solaris 9 or go with Linux.... _________________ Compaq XP1000 Alpha EV67 667Mhz w/ 2GB ECC

I'm running the experimental sparc32 build on an SS20 with no issues. _________________ Gentoo Linux is groovy, baby! Yeah! |

If those are HyperSparc's, well, it's a no go. If it's anything else (MicroSparc, SuperSparc, ...), it'll work. |

It's a quad cpu box with two dual-125 modules from Ross. These are hypersparc's, no? I guess it's a no go for me. _________________ Compaq XP1000 Alpha EV67 667Mhz w/ 2GB ECC

Hypersparcs do work, however SMP is highly buggy. I run a dual 125 box with a non-SMP kernel and it works as fine as 2.4 or 2.6 does for sparc32. |

The SMP issues are really a kernel issue, not a particular Linux distribution issue. As such, our "support" for SMP is dictated by that. |

I'm running 2.4 SMP on a dual-CPU SS20 with no issues. _________________ Gentoo Linux is groovy, baby! Yeah! |

Weeve, anything special you had to do for 2.6 to work stable?

I'm guessing they are not HyperSPARC CPU's |

Correct, looks like they are SuperSparc IIs...
Code: | $ cat /proc/cpuinfo

At least I'm running _ThA ReAl_ (old fashioned) hypersparcs with a 2.4.x SMP kernel
Code: | bruce / # cat /proc/cpuinfo
cpu : Texas Instruments, Inc. - MicroSparc
fpu : SuperSparc on-chip FPU
promlib : Version 3 Revision 2
prom : 2.22
type : sun4m
ncpus probed : 2
ncpus active : 2
Cpu0Bogo : 40.14
Cpu1Bogo : 40.24
MMU type : TI Viking/MXCC
contexts : 65536
nocache total : 5242880
nocache used : 469760
CPU0 : online
CPU1 : online
bruce / # uname -a
Linux bruce 2.4.30 #3 SMP Wed Jun 1 11:20:05 CEST 2005 sparc sun4m Texas Instruments, Inc. - MicroSparc GNU/Linux
bruce / # cat /proc/openprom/model
'SUNW,S20,501-2365'
bruce / # cat /proc/openprom/banner-name
'SPARCstation 20 MP (2 X 390Z55)'
bruce / # cat /proc/openprom/name
'SUNW,SPARCstation-20L' |
It only has one issue... when copying between its two SCSI disks 2 or more very large files (300MB+) at the same time.... it just "stops" only a power-reset helps...... but its seems like this is the SCSI driver, card, cable, termination, disks - chain that is having issues... As running at very high loads doesn't hurt little bruce
But getting it this far was quite a hell as i'd to try different 2.4.x kernels until this one was able to start both processors.. instead of starting one and crashing while starting the second... or panic-ing while booting etc....
And i agree with weeve on this: Quote: | Hypersparcs do work, however SMP is highly buggy. I run a dual 125 box with a non-SMP kernel and it works as fine as 2.4 or 2.6 does for sparc32. |
As my two e250's can run (2.6.x) at high loads as well but a lot of disk activity kills them (happened only 3 times for each box in its complete gentoo life of little over 1 year) _________________ SUN E250 2 x UltrasparcII@400Mhz 512MB RAM 6 x 9GB Kernel 2.6.8 (SMP)

SUN E250 UltrasparcII@400Mhz 1024MB RAM 2 x 9GB

Only real trick was getting the kernel small enough. If you use the new 2006.0 profiles with gcc-3.4.x, that should be a little easier as the compiled code is typically smaller in size than with gcc-3.3.x

I've got two different SS20s, one with dual HyperSPARCs (ROSS 125 MHz) and dual SuperSPARCs (75MHz). |
