UFS kernel write in 2.6.15 onwards? Vanilla sources...

Hi there,

Just went about updating my system after a year (oops).

Tryed to update portage and it fell over at the end. Updated the profile and then updated portage and it seemed to be ok.

Anyway, was about to trash my sunfs disk and repartition and I saw someone say that there is now write support in latest kernel. Is this correct...and is it stable?

Also, when I initially installed I used the vanilla-sources as I think then it was the only 2.6 kernel? Now when I do an emerge search vanilla-sources it reports 2.4.32 is the latest when I have 2.6.6 installed. Am I supposed to be using gentoo-sources now? If so should I unmerge vanilla before emerge gentoo?

For 2.4 kernels sparc-sources is recommended, for 2.6 gentoo-sources.
If you wanna go the vanilla route 2.4 is pretty safe usually but 2.6 can be spotty, we make sure gentoo-sources is properly keyworded or not according to it's status, for example gentoo-sources-2.6.16 isn't even ~sparc because it's a regression on 2.6.15-r*.
The UFS write option exists, but it isn't quite trusty, careful with that one. Data corruption is likely.

Thanks for that......I am sure there was a reason I used Vanilla sources before, but I see that the documentation has changed now so I cannot see why I did it! So what is the safe way for me to proceed now? I see that in my world file it has the vanilla sources. Should I unmerge this then merge the gentoo sources?

OK I backed up my image in /boot unmasked 2.6.15-r1 and am emerging gentoo-sources ...fingers crossed

You can usally use the latest ~sparc gentoo-sources, with respect to 2.6.15-r1 there were some bugs fixed in later revs so i'd say go for 2.6.15-r7.

OK compiled and rebooted OK. I did unmerge the 2.6.6 but the source didnt dissapear so I rm -r it....

But I still do not have write support. I looked in the menuconfig and all I could see configuration wise was that it was as a module. I found a thread earlier today which is what prompted me to try a different kernel, but I cant for the life of me find it now!

You have to enable EXPERIMENTAL support to get the write option then.

Just looked down the config and it was underneath the UFS support. Funny that the UFS support was a module, whereas the write support labelled as 'dangerous' was in the kernel. Anyway, it was already on....

I am emerging r7 now and will have a think....

OK, I did a google and found out that if you remount the device it works.......and it does!

mount -o remount,rw <ufs-device>

Now does anyone know how to get around this?

OK, I just spent the best part of the afternoon recovering my system as the UFS support cratered the system and somehow trashed my silo config in /boot.....had to use the universal disc to boot and repair....luckily it all come up OK...

Now, as I was actually at my box when it booted I noticed that it come up with an error saying that DEVFS was not configured in the kernel. Now looking at the kernel stuff in handbook it only says for this for 2.4 kernels....am I missing something?
