I could possibly be getting my hands on a "Sun Ultra2 3d Creator, 1x UltraSparc 200Mhz 1MB Cache CPUs, 448MB of ram, 9GB hard drive, NO floppy, CD-Rom, 2 Frame buffers".
Would gentoo run on this? And any equivalen x86 speed? 200mhz ultrasparc is like what? a 586-200? pentium2?
Any help would be appreciated, dont know much about Sun/Sparc.
Thanks. |

Hi,
I've a machine quite similar to that, it's an ultra 2 creator 3d, 2x 300mhz ultrasparcII and gentoo runs fine on it(as a web and database server)
for start you can say
ultrasparc II <=> pentium III
1mhz <=> 2mhz
so an ultrasparc II 200mhz whould be equal to a pentium III 400mhz which is quote slow if you plan to use it as a desktop.
(and ultra2 scsi is also damn slow...~20mb/s)
but what does "2 Frame buffers" mean? _________________ Black Holes are created when God divides by zero! |

Hi everybody
I have a slightly different box, it is a ultrasparc10. I recomment not to use the older sparc as a desktop, mine has a limit of ide-nodma so things take their time, anyway, without X it is very stable machine. recommended more as a server |
