When I installed my Gentoo 2005.0 I was disappointed that "installer" lacks of Reiserfs support. Does the 2005.1/2006.0 install CDs have the reiserfs support? I know that easiest way to find out is to simply download CD images and try them out but for now I have only a modem so it is not very good idea. _________________ IA32 - Slackware

I never used the installer but if you just give the Gentoo Handbook a try you will find that Reiserfs support is available in 2005.0. It is really worth trying!
Good luck! |

If you don't want to reinstall, just emerge reiserfsprogs and enable support for the filesystem in your kernel. It might be too late if you have no way of reformatting your partitions; but a new installation is not necessarily needed. |

Am I blind? I run the Gentoo SPARC cd look in /sbin, /usr/sbin and I can not find
any reiserfs tools. Do I have some damaged cd? I can not find any thing about reiserfs in Gentoo SPARC Handbook.
BTH: "installer" - I mean simply the Gentoo installation cd. You say that there is a graphical installer for SPARC? _________________ IA32 - Slackware

they do not have reiserfs support.
reiserfs is not(no longer) supported on sparc. i think 2004.1 live cd had reiserfs support but you should stick to ext3 _________________ Black Holes are created when God divides by zero! |

Oh no!
The support has been dropped?! Anyone knows why? I see stable (not masked) reiserfsprogs-3.6.19 for SPARC. _________________ IA32 - Slackware

That's because reiserfs is broken in the kernel.
It looks right and works right - for a while - until you start to get some subtle file corruption that can't be fixed. _________________ Gustavo Zacarias

You mean broken for SPARC architecture, not in general right? _________________ IA32 - Slackware

Yes, of course, only on SPARC.
I cannot recommend anything but ext2/ext3 on SPARC. _________________ Gentoo Linux is groovy, baby! Yeah! |

Thank you everyone. You stopped me from making critical mistake with Reiserfs on SPARC. Hope it will be fixed one day. For the time being my SPARC Gentoo will be the only Linux I use placed on non-Reiserfs filesystem. _________________ IA32 - Slackware

I'm a ReiserFS fan myself. I run it on my i686 (AMD Athlon) Gentoo box but I've only used ext2/3 on my SPARCs due to the dangers. _________________ Gentoo Linux is groovy, baby! Yeah! |
