I've just rebuilt my system from stage 2. Setting hdparm was OK as suggested in the install docs (although these settings aren't saved, so should something be added to the docs?)
So, after working though all the install, building my kernel (gs-sources) I reboot. Knowing that hdparm settings won't have been saved, I reenter them in the console, before putting them in /etc/conf.d/local.start.
When I enter them in the console, I get an error however!!!
I'm at work now, but it's something like:
Code:
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted

Now, due to the uppercase text, I assume this is some sort of kernel configuration problem, so I was hoping someone might be able to tell me what it is? I didn't change any of the DMA choices in the kernel (because I don't know what they are!!)

I had a problem with gentoo-sources-2.4.10-X, it just wouldn't let me use DMA on the disk, I emerged vanilla sources, I had no problems. But since then I've been using ck-sources with no problems.

to answer you question, check if your drive has DMA enabled, it will not be and a -d1 is supported with your current kernel.

Perhaps I should give ck-sources a try also.

It's not really the sources, you probably don't have IDE chipset support compiled in that's specific for your hardware. I couldn't run drives in DMA mode until I compiled in the VIA chipset support. The reason other kernels work I'm guessing is because their generic chipset support actually supports your system.

I am able to get everything to run OK with the gaming sources.
Anyhow, that's good enough for the moment.
