short question: whats the status of gcc 4 on sparc64?
i've upgraded my system from gcc 3.3.6 to 3.4.5 - quite a painfull experience, but it does work...
i've taken a look at some other distros (ok, all x86 based) and some are starting to include gcc4 as default.
btw, status page for gcc 4.0.2 says that compiler tests on sparc64/solaris are ok.
i know there were some issues on sparc64/linux, but i cannot find any usefull data. |

It's being worked on, it'll get a ~sparc keyword when it's ready to go.
The compiler passing its tests doesn't mean it'll build everything right, try building glibc with gcc-4 on sparc and see...
There's a catch, if it builds a bad glibc you'll be left with a useless system... _________________ Gustavo Zacarias

i'm quite aware of consequences of bad glibc
and i do know that gcc4 does not work properly on sparc64/linux, but thats not really publicly discussed anywhere on gentoo.org (or at least i cannot find it)...
like my original post said "whats the status of gcc4 on sparc64" - i'm just looking for a bit more info...
normally, i'd pull up a cvs and check in readme/changelog/whatever myself, but there is no such thing on gentoo... |

Usually the best way to know about sparc advances is to join #gentoo-sparc on irc.freenode.net. _________________ Gustavo Zacarias

You may wish to install GCC4, but not use it as your default compiler. Thankfully, gentoo has GCC config. On x86, I have gcc 3.4, 4.x, and icc v7 installed. 3.4 is the compiler I use for everything. When I want to speed up and test a specific package (I do a lot of xvid encoding), I will switch to another compiler before installing xvid (and remember to switch back when done). FLAC encoding is 20% faster when compiled with icc (over GCC) on an athlon-xp.
So, stick with the default 3.4 for the ~branch, and if you want to have some fun, compile often-used non-critical standalone binaries with the compiler of your choice. Do one at a time, test functionality as you go. Expect problems. Enable make-test.
