For anyone out there who has wanted to check out Xgl without messing up their system ;) I have released a Live CD.

The Live CD comes with Xorg 7, Gnome 2.14, KDE 3.5.2, 3D support and of course Xgl ;)

You need an nVidia Geforce (nvidia) or ATI Radeon (fglrx) video card, ATI Radeon DRI or Intel DRI (tested on my i865)

Bittorrent is available here.

If you want more info see here here.

Enjoy!

Chris

Wow! This rocks. Is this x11r7?

If I installed x11r7 through protage, would I still be able to play quake?

Thank you taskara for this very good LiveCD.
I tried it on an IBM Thinkpad T43 with ati mobility X300, it works great.

How do I become root? The livecd didn't detect my network card properly, I want to do some configuration.

Edit: OK, I get it, it's "sudo su -". I tried it again, this time networking works. :)

Quite impressive and seem very stable on GeForce FX 5900.

Great! Thanks everyone. Glad it works for you and that you like it :)

I am so sorry about the broken link! The ISO appears to have been extremely popular.

As such my hosting provider had to turn the ISO off because it was utilising too much bandwidth.
I am currently in the process of arranging some mirrors. In the mean time, there is a bittorrent available here:
http://linuxtracker.org/torrents-details.php?id=1604

Once again, I'm sorry for the inconvenience :(

I hope you enjoy the Live CD once you can get it :)

Cheers,
Chris

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to play.

first: it runs great for me. 8)

ive XGL already running on my little linux box (Athlon XP, FX5200 128MB, 512MB RAM) and there i have high cpu usage when i do something like watching video with mplayer -vo xv

but with your live cd, tested on my windows game machine (A64 2500MHz, 1GB RAM, 6800Ultra) all runs with low CPU usage. totem plays great windowed or full screen. its nice!

im using on my linux box an older overlay: 20060210
what versions of XGL,MESA,compiz, glitz do you use for this live-cd?
are there some performance improvements?

It works fine here on a X850XT with ati-drivers despite some lockups which happen when you repeat an action to many times. Now I finally know that Xorg7 and XGL is possible on my card.

Thanks alot!

It's just amazing! Never thought it would actually work on my 9600xt, but hell, this is great!
Thanks again for the livecd! :D

This is just a general question, but is there any sign of a sans-gnome-depending xgl?

I really have no desire to compile nautilus in order to use XGL.

Nice livecd regardless, I think I'll swallow my pride and merge xgl on my computer.

8O This is GREAT !!

It works really well with my "poor" FX5200 ...

I've got just one request for this LiveCD : could you add one 3D app like "tuxracer" just to make some fps measurements please (as glxgears is not a benchmark tool) ??

Enjoy !

this liveCD rocks!!!
But the downside is: I'll probably get addictetd to that faboulus eyecandy, try to install it and be sitting for hours infront of my screen. ;-)
Thanks for that great job.

Edit:
everything works fine, couldn't find any problems. My graphics cardd is a Geforce4 MX440.

In theory: yes, since the hardware will support it.
But xgl supports only the use of the closed sourced driver crap atm and afaik fglrx doesn't support the 7500's anymore.

Ahh.. I don't know off the top of my head, but I could find out. I just used the latests available ones ;)

Hey, I'm afraid this livecd won't, because as Q-collective has mentioned the 7500 card is only supported under Kernel based DRI, not the ATI's fglrx driver :(

I'm hoping to get DRI also working on this CD for the next release, as well as some other goodies like tuxracer for yoyo :)

Cheers
