mod_php C++ merge problem

I'm having a weird problem when trying to merge dev-php/mod_php-4.3.1-r2:

checking whether the C++ compiler (g++ -mcpu=athlon-tbird -O3 -pipe -Wl,-rpath,/opt/ibm-jdk-1.4.0/jre/bin/classic -L/opt/ibm-jdk-1.4.0/jre/bin/classic -Wl,-rpath,/opt/ibm-jdk-1.4.0/jre/bin -L/opt/ibm-jdk-1.4.0/jre/bin -Wl,-rpath,/usr/qt/3/lib -L/usr/qt/3/lib) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C++ compiler cannot create executables.

My C++ compiler is just fine, as I can merge KDE applications without problems. What am I doing wrong?
