Seagate ST39111A (9.1GB) Sun Ultra-5

midway though my stage-3 untar (stage3-sparc64-2006.0.tar.bz2 ) , the tar 'locks' up, and eventually I get

Code:

Can't create output file 'blah'.. Input/output error

I've done about a dozen or so installs on x86, and I'm guessing here maybe this is just bad hardware?

However... I've had Solaris 8 running just fine on this box for about 3 years... I finally decided to scrap it, and put gentoo on it to match everything else I have.. :-D

After the problem, I also can't access /dev/hda until I power cycle the box??? It seems to loose it during the untar...

I did make the mistake of deleting the /dev/hda3 Sun partitiion when I first started, but... did go though the hand book, and re-instate it..

Does someone have any ideas? maybe a OBP setting? or... something? I'm at a loss, and don't have another SATA drive to test with... :-(

Thanks!

IDE DMA is broken on the chipset onboard U5/10 machines.
Just disable DMA when booting.

I get to about the same point as I did before in the untar.. and...

Code:

./usr/lib/gcc/sparc-unknown-linux-gnu/3.4.5/include/g++-v3/sparc-unknown-linux-gnu/bits/stdc++.h.gch/O0g
hda: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }

./usr/lib/gcc/sparc-unknown-linux-gnu/3.4.5/include/g++-v3/sparc-unknown-linux-gnu/bits/stdc++.h.gch/O0g
hda: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }

./usr/lib/gcc/sparc-unknown-linux-gnu/3.4.5/include/g++-v3/sparc-unknown-linux-gnu/bits/
./usr/lib/gcc/sparc-unknown-linux-gnu/3.4.5/include/g++-v3/sparc-unknown-linux-gnu/bits/stdc++.h.gch/
./usr/lib/gcc/sparc-unknown-linux-gnu/3.4.5/include/g++-v3/sparc-unknown-linux-gnu/bits/stdc++.h.gch/O0g
hda: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }

./usr/lib/gcc/sparc-unknown-linux-gnu/3.4.5/include/g++-v3/sparc-unknown-linux-gnu/bits/stdc++.h.gch/O0g
hda: irq time

followed by spewing of

Code:

end_request: I/O error, dev 03:04 (hda), sector 7616096
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:04 (hda), sector 7616104
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:04 (hda), sector 7616112
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:04 (hda), sector 7616120
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:04 (hda), sector 7616128
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:04 (hda), sector 7616136
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:04 (hda), sector 7616144

maybe almost there?

Is it possible that I don't have the /dev/hda3 Sunlable partition setup correctly?

I'd say its possible...

I had a hell of a time with a pair of 40GB ATA133 drives I was trying to use in my U10, I never managed to get the sun disk setup to work properly, I would suggest you start the solaris install, let that sort the disk setup out, and then reboot and start the Gentoo install (without removing the 3rd partition).

Hope that helps.
