I have made the upgrade from version 1.5.0 and now i can get xorg to start.
I already have xorg 7.0 instaled before upgrading to version 2.0 of this guide.

I get the fowling error:

Code:
could not open default font 'fixed'

I have read the faq from xorg, but that dont help.

Any ideias?

Yep.. Same problem here... I've been fighting with it since yesterday, and almost recompiled world again :P
Quote:
This is common when using -Bdirect. IF you are in your LDFLAGS, then do this:

Add to "/etc/portage/bashrc" (Probably a new file)

Kod:
Code:

[[ "$CATEGORY/$P" == "x11-libs/libXfont-1.0.0" ]] \
        && export LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--sort-common -Wl,--enable-new-dtags -Wl,-hashvals -Wl,-zdynsort"

Change your LDFLAGS here (But don't include -Bdirect.)

I don't know if it works, but I've found it in the Xorg lockups thread ;)

WOW, that also solved my kernel-panic-problem, thank you :)

the power went off during emerge -e world  the new baselayout trashed my network. I can fix it (I think) but would have to start the emerge -e world over. Any suggestions?

That is always bad ;) with the new baselayout it may have overwrote your /etc/conf.d/net, you may need to re-edit those files.

Since the power went out, you will probally have to emerge -e world again :X

Do this

Code:
# cd /usr/local/overlays/conrad-guide/media-libs
# rm -r fontconfig
# wget http://snigel.no-ip.com/~nxsty/linux/fontconfig-overlay.tar.bz2
# tar -jxvpf fontconfig-overlay.tar.bz2
# rm fontconfig-overlay.tar.bz2

Then it will emerge.

I found another problem. Xpdf failed to start. There was some problem with "Unresolved inheritance operation". I've recompiled libXt with LDFLAGS="" and problem dissapeared..

cheater, I set up identical systems with tuned ext3 and reiser4. What's a good way to benchmark each?

You can always test with hdparm (hdparm -tT /dev/hda)

And doing emerge -s benchmark, will come up with a number of fs benchmarks.

Also, make sure it is the same hard drive in each install, different hard drives = different speeds. make sure they are both the same ata/sata interface and it may also depend on the manufacturer of the drive.

thanks a lot bigbob73.

I think it is not a question, the conrad guide will be using reiser4.
----

Here is a change happening to the conrad projects.

Nesl247 is breaking apart to maintain his own personal install guide, I am staying with conrad gentoo projects as always, to bring you all the usual projects.

The new LiveCD 1.0.0 is being built from scratch, so it will be incredible and a lot lighter. it will also feature no-sources 2.6.16 (no _rc release) It will be around soon enough

The new Install Guide 2.5.0 is reverting to old traditions (1.5.0), but keeping that extra special feeling in performance and many other aspects. It will use a gcc 4.1 snapshot ebuild (made by me), glibc-2.3.6-r3 by nxsty but modified by me, the latest binutils 2.16.91* in portage, but patched with Bdirect by me. There will be no root-overlay package.

The new project LuckyLive32/64 will be based off of the new install guide, and will be maintained my mpalancia, it will be an installable X-LiveCD featuring KDE, so you can get conrad quick and pretty ;)

The new project Conrad Stage3's will be based off of the install guide, it will be maintained by me (cheater-conrad), it will feature a few important architectures (i686/athlon-xp/pentium4/pentium3) it will be used for a quick conrad setup.

THe new no-sources release (2.6.16), will be a stable release, it will still feature mutexes, but it wont be as heavy as the current (2.6.16_rc4-no1) kernel, it has tons of performance patches, I hope to make one that still performs, but will be more stable.

Stay tuned ;) You can come by #conrad in freenode if you have any further questions.

There were debates about reiser4 and tuned ext3 in #conrad :-p

He tested it for us.

Reiser4 = slightly worse latency, better thoroughput
tuned ext3 = sligthly better latency, worse throughput

Conclusion = Both are decent, reiser4 needs improvement in latency, which is being worked on now, reiser4 is the better performer, and they both use ABOUT EQUAL cpu usage when ext3 is "tuned" Reiser4 is a better performer overall according to tests, and I vote it more stable than ext3 ;) (reiser4 1.0.5 doesnt break except due to user fault, ext3 corrupts often :X)

I __really__ don't want to start a filesystem flamewar here, but what you said is just not true. I think you can't say that ext3 corrupts more often then reiser. There are so many stories that tell us the opposite, but also a lot othere that probaly confirm what you said.

So nevermind, but for me reiserfs once sucked and now I am using ext3.

Have a nice day.

Just so you know reiserfs is completely different from reiser4 since reiser4 is atomic. I've hard rebooted my system several times with reiser4 and it hasn't failed me yet.

I would get a corrupt system with reiserfs and ext3 if I did this too often.

Yes it is completely true.

I believe ext3 has a poor structure and is very weak.

Reiser4 has certainly not corrupted more filesystems, but these stories you read are from 0.9x reiser4, the current version is completely stable, 1.0.5. Reiser4 is perfectly stable, and if you experience problems with the current version it may very well be a bad kernel patch or user fault.

Also, reiserfs = completely different than reiser4, dont even compare them :-p
