Id like to document some problems in the current gentoo test iso 'gentoo-s32-s64-test2.iso'
1) you cannot use any binaries that require encryption lib files in /lib, a path bust be set wrong. ie you cannot use scp, ssh, wget, or lynx. once you chroot into your new 'root', all is good. but unfortunatley you cannot download a stage*.bz2 to chroot into.
2) im not sure why, but on rescue bootup, and ramdisk i believe, before it drops you into a prompt for user login, 'Starting local...' seems to hang everytime i bootup.
At the current time, i have resorted to booting from the 1.1a iso and follow a few initial steps to get network up and then im able to dl the stage zip. But keep in mind, that the 1.1a iso does not support the ext3 fs and are allowed only to mount and ext2 fs.
I am running a sparc20 (sun4m), 398mb RAM, 4x125mhz ROSS hypersparcs. |

A bug still exists in the current test3.iso where 'Starting local...' never drops you into bash. It hangs and at the moment i do not know a work around. |

My sparc 20 is happily bootstrapping from the test3.iso right now. Did you boot with ramdisk or rescue? Ramdisk is depreciated so boot with rescue. |

i booted the test3.iso with rescue, i wasnt able to get into a shell. it hung after "Starting local..." but as Weeve pointed out, local doesnt load anything, so it must be something after the local init script. After test.iso ( ie. test2.iso and test3.iso ) i was not able to boot. good luck. |

I'm trying to boot the test3 iso from the open boot prompt on a sunblade 100.
I got stop-a, type "boot cdrom" and SILO comes up. Then when I type rescue i get "Fast data access MMU miss". Apparently, this is caused due to an outdated version of SILO that does not work on sun4u arch? See http://lists.linuxpower.org/pipermail/aurora-sparc-devel/2002-March/000646.html.
Is it possible you could update the silo package and release a new iso? |

Hiya Reesm
Thanks for the report, I'll look into it and try to get it into a new version of the ISO soon. |

Sparc Ultra 10 (UltraSPARC-IIi). Have existing Gentoo installed.
Test booting iso image. Boot OK.
Can run ramdisk image from SILO, shell prompt appears.
Cannot run rescue image from SILO.
After Gentoo Linux banner, following errors appear:
fsck: fsck.xfs: not found
fsck: Error 2 while executing fsck.xfs for /dev/ROOT
* Failed to calculate dependencies
modprobe: Can't open dependencies file...(No such file or...)
fsck.ext2: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/BOOT
* Failed to set system clock to hardware clock
* ERROR: Problem starting needed services.
* "bootmisc" was not started.
input in flex scanner failed
* Error loading key mappings
After * Starting local... (long pause)
INIT: Id "c0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel
Hope this stuff can help build a better iso.
EDIT: It would appear only a serial console is available from rescue image. |

the test3 ISO died on boot on my machine too
I used the "rescue" image to boot.
Sparcstation 5, 128 MB RAM
The last lines on the screen:
INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
* Mounting network filesystems... [ok]
* Starting local... [ok]
< now the machine is stuck here -- never get to the shell >
Hope this gets fixed... I'll try booting with the Aurora iso.
Thanks! |

hi,
i booted up with test3.iso (on ss4), experienced same problem when starting "rescue", but "ramdisk" worked fine.
my problem is, that my partition is more than 1GB and silo won't boot.
