I am trying to install my Alcatel speedtouch usb modem onto my gentoo box. The usb card that is in the machine works (only tested with windows, though it is supposedly linux compatible). unfortunatly it will not detect my modem, or anything else for that matter. while gentto was being compiled the box gave the usual the device has been pluged into me message however now that the system is running this does not happen. /proc/bus/usb/devices has nothing in it aswell. As a linux newcomer any help would be great

I don't know anything about usb modems, but I've just had a few hassles with my usb mouse, so here's some tips (if you haven't tried them).
Code: |
emerge hotplug
/etc/init.d/hotplug start
rc-update add hotplug default
|
You may see some errors when doing this, it could lead to some problem areas for you.
Anyway, it's the only suggestion I have.
