well, as I'm becoming more and more spoiled with portage, I've somehow switched all my PC's to gentoo, including my linux boxes at work! Is it wrong to be so specialized??? I noticed yesterday I couldn't solve an NFS Server problem on my slackware machine, so I bumped it and am currently setting it up as a gentoo box... I'm starting to lose touch with those other distros and how they treat things... I'd like to eventually get certified with Linux (CompTIA, I think :? ), but is specializing in only gentoo going to hinder that? I mean, portage is just so easy... and then there's 'rc-update' which makes it even easier...

I am striving to chroot all my vunerable services which is forcing me to learn alot, which is helping, but do I need to be more well-versed in the linux distro arena? Would you guys/gals happen to have any suggestions as to not lose touch with the way other distros work?

Start writing ebuilds, this way you learn about what they actually do and you should be able to do the same without their help.

You could also build a LFS under usermode linux or in vmware.
