Ok, I have folowed the printer guide, searched the forums etc... and can seemto get my Canon s300 to function.
My printer is picked up by USB and appears in /dev/usb/lp0 and is only there when the printer is turned on...which suggests that its really being detected.
I then follow the next step in the guide to send plain text to the printer, before installing cups... well the light on the printer briefly flickers, suggesting it has received something from the PC, but then nothing..... I really am at a loss as to where to go next...I would love to be having problems with cups or gimp-print drivers etc...but it seems my printer doesnt want to listen to what its being sent... any ideas. Its so weird I dont know where to start...

Do you get any logs for cups? Code: | cat /var/log/cups/error_log |

If you are sending a plain text file to the printer, make sure you put a page eject character Cntrl-L after the text you sent it. It won't spit out a page til it is full otherwise.

I have tried dumping all manner of text content to the printer.... Still no joy. I dont think ther is much point trying to configure CUPS if I cant get text to output. Damn Canon, should have bought HP!! _________________ Dont you just hate sigs? I do.... |

i thought that too ... until i just tried installing cups and foomatic following the gentoo guide to printing. the printer just seems to have issues with direct text printing.
the command to generate the ppd file was
Code: | foomatic-configure -s cups -p 123776 -c file:/dev/usb/lp0 -n Canon -d bj8pa06n.upp
|
good luck |
