Hi,

I've run bonnie++ on some different platforms. Interesting to see, that my U10 under Gentoo has such a poor performance for "Sequential Output - Per Chr (K/sec)":
Quote:

Gentoo/U10: 50
NetBSD/U1: 2.600
Linux*/PowerPC: 6.500
Linux*/x86: 65.500

* = Debian 3.1 or SLES 9

The other values for character-based access are in the same relation. The differences in block-access are by far not so big. So what's the reason, that especially the character based access is so slow under Linux/SPARC? Even my U1 (143MHz/128MB RAM) is more than 50 times faster with NetBSD running than my U10 (440MHz/1GB RAM) with Gentoo running.

That's what i get on my U5, which is basically the same as a U10.
The only likely difference is that i'm on scsi and you're probably on ide, and the ide controller on u5/10 machines (or most Sun sparc machines for that matter) tends to be very sucky and buggy.
