what do all the kernel compile options do eg make modules, make modules_install, make dep, make mrproper, make clean etc etc etc. what do they all do? _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)

make modules:
Builds any code you chose to have compiled as a module (i.e. Not /in/ kernel)
make modules_install:
Installs (and compiles if necessary) code you chose to compile as a module.
make dep:
Builds dependencies files. Run after every config change.
make mrproper:
Completely cleans the source tree. Use this if you get strange symbol errors, then reconfigure you kernel, and recompile.
make clean:
Lesser form of make mrproper. Not much good.
make config:
Configure the kernel. Sucks.
make menuconfig:
Configure the kernel. Pretty nice.
make xconfig:
Configue the kernel. Nice, if you have X working. _________________ Gentoo:
