Hi!

I'm a beginner in the world of linux, and decided to go Gentoo-way to learn a bit. :)

Spent almost all day reading docs, wiki and installing 2005.1-r1 from the universal livecd. I've succeeded with the basic installation described by the handbook. But - of course - there are some problems that need fixing, and I need your help.

Ncurses-based apps such as kernel menuconfig or centericq are messed up: interface elements like labels and edit controls are jumping like mad when the screen needs to be updated (for example, when I navigate through a simple menu with the arrow keys each selected option gets shifted sereral characters to the right while chunks of it remain where they were positioned). How can I fix that? I use a vesafb framebuffer console output in 1024x769-32@85 mode.

Thanks in advance!

Same thing here and not solved yet. It's really weird. Using the gnome-terminal works fine.

I found some tips on how to get it fixed: http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Resetting_Your_Console
Didn't try that for myself yet, but I'm going to do it now.

OK, the tips are not quite what we want.

The solution:
If you want unicode in console, you must also have a font that supports utf8. Then just follow the unicode guide in the wiki.
If you don't want unicode, follow the standard localization guide. All problems with messy ncurses will eventually be gone.

By editing "/etc/conf.d/consolefont" file and then applying new settings by executing "/etc/init.d/consolefont restart".
Fonts to choose from are located in the "/usr/share/fonts" directory.
