Ok, so I'm trying to trick out my mom's laptop, she's running Ubuntu and I think it'll have to stay that way, however I want to install portage. I've heard it can be done, and that people have done it on Mac OS X (which I think is really cool). However, I downloaded a portage snapshot, and guess what! No emerge binary. I guess I should have expected that because while staring at my screen installing Gentoo I've never actually seen a bin directory for portage. Any ideas? Comments? Suggestions?

Thanks,
-Peter

Thanks. On ubuntu is there any reason why glibc/binutils/etc are going to kill it? I've installed them using apt-get before with no problems.

Thanks,
-Peter

Those are components of the toolchain. It's like messing with the foundations of a house

If your changes are binary-compatible with the old versions, you may get away with it. There's also patches to take into consideration.

Ouch! I guess I'll have to find Ramjack for Ubuntu. Thanks for the help.
