Java / SSH / TTY wierdness

Hey, I've been trying to load several servlet engines and have noticed that the applications only load correctly under a local TTY session. SSH sessions almost always result in a hang before the app can bind to a network port. Has anyone noticed similiar behavior? Any hints? I tried to make sure that the environments were the same, sourced the profile etc, still no dice.

Some specs:
Gentoo 1.4, clean install (minimal system)

Sun Java 1.4.02
Tomcat or Jetty

I thought someone else alluded to a similiar problem in another post but the solution (sourcing the profile) didn't work for me. Has anyone ever seen such wierdness? Thanks very much.
