Folks, I like the layout of the forums. However, I was kind of pist when I saw you allow AIM, MSN and Yahoo! in the IM section in each profile, but you don't have an 'open-source' option, like Jabber... please consider to add one.

Thanks for your work.

We use the default options offered by phpBB. If you'd like to see additional options available, please submit a feature request or patch to the phpBB code base.

Here are some instructions for installing jabber ID support into the forums.

http://psi.affinix.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=47

http://psi.affinix.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=261&highlight=jabber+phpbb

or just download it at:
http://www.homelesshackers.org/phpbbjabmod.tar.bz2

Can we have this? It is OS afterall...

Could somebody more familiar with that codebase reassure me on a couple of points? First, that it would not require users to turn Javascript on to actually function correctly. Second, that it would not disable all the other IM buttons we currently have in our profiles.

How much of a pain would it be to maintain across upgrades? Also, has there been any official response from the phpbb team on including this in a future version? If they don't plan to include it, why not?

I'm following up on those questions.

I also found a discussion from mid-late 2002 to present on this issue the phpbb mod forum.
http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=43942

Looks like it had support and is being developed, but slowed down a bit at some point.

We are trying to include Jabber Support into the next major release (phpBB 2.2).

Here is an update from a member of the phpBB team concerning this issue.

Acyd Burn wrote:
I (and BartVB) am waiting for the xmpp implementation, a simple protocol layer or a browser API able to be used.

At the moment, all jabber integrations are using a second user account to gather online and contact informations. This method is not usable by most of users and we do not want to compromise anything through another user account. icon_smile.gif

We basicely have to wait for the jabber people.

When I last talked to stpeter, he was not sure on a completion date for this so I'm not sure it if will make it into the next version, but some version coming.

Ok, I did it

I take the akito hack and I adapt it...

here's the file : http://frimouvy.udev.org/phpbbjabmod.zip

(it only works with subsilver skin, in english and in french. See the README for others languages )

But I still have two majors bugs :

- Jabber ID field must be filled each time you modify your profile. I don't know why...

- admin cannot see the Jabber ID field of users... How change this ?

you can see the result here : http://frimouvy.udev.org/phpbb/jab2/index.php

in order to use this hack, you have to manually add an entry in your database called "user_jab"

Take the same properties of the "user_MSN".

my JID : ploum@amessage.de

Ok, those bugs are solved.
The only thing I see now is that the admin cannot change the JabID of users with the admin panel. But it's fully usable !

If you want to install it without fear, simply copy all your phpbb directory in another directory called "jabtest" (for example).
Then, simply unzip my files in jabtest and overwrite.
You can nom test de jabtest forum. If it works for you, simply overwrite your old phpbb directory with jabtest directory.
(you have to create the user_jab fields in your mySql db, of course)

It works for me ! :D

http://www.jabber.org/jeps/jep-0081.html is a link to a doc that I expect will become the norm for connecting from a web browser to a client. This is a MIME type. I'll be posting information of phpBBs site and hope a module will be developed soon.

This is interesting. Has anything happened with this during the last 17 months?

I don't understand what you want to say. All those comments are nearly 17 months old. Has anything new happened in the meantime?

I don't think so.

No, nothing. Please see the link I posted for an explanation of why nothing has happened.

I read that already, but I thought in the meantime something at the phpbb team had maybe changed. Thanks anyway for your response.

In the meantime I tried to add this at least to my signature. But somehow it doesn't work. HTML is turned OFF for Signatures so I tried to do it with BBCode. After reading the "BBCode Guide", I figured out that what I need is
Code:
[url=jabber://spw@jabber.dk][img]http://www2.vo.lu/homepages/spw/thunderpire/jabber.jpg[/img][/url]

(I know that "jabber://" is not a supported protocoll, but didn't find any other solution for this.) The problem is that images never get added to the post. Has this been turned off now to prevent users from adding too many big images?

The things stated there are still true. Please read the other thread and make any comments there.

You could put it in your sig, which would be more noticeable.

I found this after I thought of something and found this topic.
http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=219163

I also see that jabber will be in phpbb 2.2 and you will be able to recieve notifications via jabber for topic replies (what my original idea was). I haven't read the timeline on 2.2 yet and this forum is still at 2.0.6 or it says it is, so it may be awhile. ;)

There is no real "timeline." I would discourage searching for when 2.2 was first mentioned as being under development.
